We're half way through the year! In the first six months of 2024 we have seen our missions increase by more than 20% which means we're busier than ever before. Our Critical Care Team have been called out to 1,159 people in urgent need - we are responding to an extra person every day on average. Coupled with this, our operating costs have been rising and an average call-out is now £2,200 which is an increase of 10%. About us
The Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, one of the few air ambulances in the country to work to the Gold Standard Critical Care Model. Put simply it means we are a flying Emergency Department transporting a Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care and a Consultant Doctor to the scene of an incident or medical emergency. The GWAAC Critical Care Team cover Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire. A population of 2.1 million people. The team are operational seven days a week, 365 days a year and attend over 5 incidents per day on average. We are one of the busiest air ambulances in the UK. We receive no government or national lottery funding so completely rely on the communities we serve to help us raise over £4 million each year, so we can be there when people need us.

Our flagship comedy night, Heli Laughs, takes place on Thursday at the Bristol Old Vic. Despite the rain, we have been at Millennium Square in central Bristol today, teaching bystander CPR and defibrillation to passers-by. 💚💙 This event has been in partnership with the Sam Polledri Foundation. Sam suffered a fatal cardiac arrest whilst out with friends in Millennium Square in 2022. Since then his family have tirelessly fundraised for public access defibrillators in an aim to make sure other families don't have to share their experience. This is the second time we have done this at Millennium Square, having previously taught CPR and defibrillation in 2022, following the installation of a defibrillator in Sam's memory. A big thank you to We The Curious for helping us make this happen.

Did you know that we carry fresh blood on board our helicopter and critical care cars? This allows us to perform emergency blood transfusions when our patients need them. However, we are only able to carry fresh blood thanks to the amazing work of Freewheelers EVS. This voluntary organisation transports the fresh blood we need to us every single day. Today is #BloodBikeAwarenessDay and we want to say a massive thank you to Freewheelers and all blood bike organisations across the country. 🩸🏍️
