We are working with Swindon Borough Council to offer a two-day 'Think Wider' apprenticeship event this month, for local Year 10 or 11 students who want to find out more about some of the apprenticeship opportunities which may be available to them in the local area. The two-day course provides students with an overview of some of the apprenticeships on offer in healthcare, the public sector and other industries. It will also offer support, guidance and tailored advice to help students meet their early career goals. The course is taking place on Monday 14 April (at Swindon Borough Council Head Office) and Tuesday 15 April (at the Academy in Great Western Hospital). Students are asked to commit to attending on both days. Travel through public transport is eligible for reimbursement. Students who are interested should register their interest via this form: https://lnkd.in/eb3FFjjA or can find out more by emailing gwh.work.experience@nhs.net

Philip Wilkinson, Police and Crime Commissioner for #Wiltshire and #Swindon, recently attended the official opening of The Base Youth Centre. This event included the launch of a collaborative project involving his office, Wiltshire Police, Swindon Borough Council, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Youth Justice Service. The new youth centre in Swindon showcases a mural created by young people in collaboration with local artist Dario Santos. The young participants are associated with WAY Swindon a youth-led charity dedicated to supporting peers facing various life challenges. Additionally, a beautiful mural has been installed in the Children's Emergency Unit at the Great Western Hospital. Both murals depict a whale guided by butterflies, symbolizing hope for the future. They include QR codes that link to online resources offering advice and guidance on serious violence and child exploitation. We were delighted to manage this project alongside the partners involved, provide the funding, and contribute content from our recent 'Spot the Signs' child exploitation campaign for the online resources. We are proud to unveil a new art mural in our Children's Emergency Unit, which has been designed and painted by young people from Swindon. The mural, which is also painted at The Base, the town's new youth centre, depicts the journey our young people take through healthcare and out across the community. This mural is a fantastic effort from partners right across the local area, including Wiltshire Police, Swindon Borough Council, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon and Swindon WAY project. The mural directs young people as well as parents, guardians, and carers, to online resources offering advice and guidance on serious violence and child exploitation, amongst other topics : https://lnkd.in/eTqDgRRd

Amazing to see our consultant surgeon, Angus Waddell, out in Nepal training up ENT surgeons to perform surgery for long-term hear disabilities, deafness and chronic ear infections. The team are working from a newly built clinic, and have performed 90 operations in the last two weeks alone.
Celebrating the later stages of Ear Camp number 69 for the THE BRITAIN-NEPAL OTOLOGY SERVICE (BRINOS). Over the last 2 weeks we have performed 90 operations to treat long term hearing disability, deafness and chronic ear infections. The vast majority of the surgery is now undertaken by Nepali surgeons in our newly built clinic. I’m just there to provide a bit of surgical teaching, coaching on clinical decision making and to provide encouragement to be both confident and precise. Our intention is that within a year or two the local team will do all of this surgery without our direct support. There are now 14 ENT doctors in this part of Nepal where, back in 1990, there was just one “Eye and Ear surgeon” for the whole country. The surgery for this camp was all done under local anaesthetic for which amazing tolerance is required from all patients aged 11 and over. In the UK all of these patients would have a general anaesthetic and be fast asleep for this sort of work. Particular thanks for funding support and equipment for this camp is owing to Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, The Ridgeway Hospital, Wrag Barn Golf Club, Sheffmed, Candice Tyers, Stewart Thompson and Harpreet Rajput. MBA, MPharm A big shout out to those who really make it possible for me to be part of this; Abigail Waddell specifically, and Deirdre Waddell, Rebecca Waddell & Archie Waddell who have been long time supporters. The Nepali team has been led this time by Ram & Yamuna Bohara and Ranjana & Bimal Budhathoki. The future is exciting for this new team. The work of BRINOS has only been achieved through an extraordinary lifetime of devotion and hard work by Neil Weir. All of those involved with BRINOS are extremely grateful for his ongoing leadership.
