About us

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is the local district authority for the borough of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK. The council serves a population of approaching 100,000 residents, living in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston-on-Sea and surrounding villages. Please see the borough council’s website for information about its services. Norfolk County Council is the other main council serving the borough. The borough is a major UK coastal resort, catering for 5.6 million day trips and 4.1 million staying nights each year, with visitors bringing more than £591 million into the local economy annually. It has also been England’s offshore energy sector capital since 1965, with an outer harbour, enterprise zone, skilled workforce, sizeable supply chain, and prospects of sharing in significant future investment in offshore windfarms and gas platform decommissioning. The council’s six main priorities are: • Economic growth • Housing • Neighbourhoods, communities and the environment • Tourism, culture and heritage • Great Yarmouth town centre • Transport and infrastructure Our ambition is for Great Yarmouth to be a fast-growing coastal “Enterprise Town”. Efforts will be focused on creating the conditions to ensure the borough and its residents are best placed to benefit from new jobs and investment, including from the next generation of offshore energy developments. The community of Great Yarmouth has been self-governing since the Charter of King John in 1209. The Council in its current form came into existence in 1974.

  • 🚴♂️🌿 Pathway Improvements at Sidegate Road, Gorleston! 🌿🚴♀️ We've been busy carrying out essential maintenance along the cycle path at Sidegate Road, ensuring a safer and more accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians. ✅ 🔹 Clearing overgrown vegetation back to the path edge to reduce encroachment and create more space for users. 🔹 Reshaping and reducing upper lateral branches of bordering woodland trees to move them away from streetlights, improving visibility and security at night. 🔹 Enhancing overall safety by ensuring the path is well-lit, unobstructed, and easier to navigate in all conditions. These improvements mean a smoother, clearer, and safer journey for everyone who uses this popular route. 🚲🚶♂️ #Gorleston #CycleSafe #CommunityImprovements #SaferPaths

  • 🌍✨ Great Yarmouth’s Portuguese Pavement Goes Global! ✨🌍 Exciting news! The upcoming Portuguese Pavement, part of Great Yarmouth’s new art trail, has already made international headlines, with the story being featured in multiple countries! 🌟 Designed by artist Rui Ferreira, this stunning piece will soon make its journey by boat before being carefully installed near King Street by two Portuguese master pavers. Their expertise is essential due to the intricate engraving in white, black, and pink stone. The design proudly incorporates the year 1386, marking the signing of the Treaty of Windsor, which represents Peace, Friendship and Alliance—the world's oldest diplomatic alliance between Portugal and the United Kingdom! 🤝 A huge thank you to the Reprezent Project, who have helped to organise this incredible installation as part of the Great Yarmouth Art Trail. 🎨🙌 Stay tuned for updates as we prepare to welcome this spectacular international artwork to our town! #PortuguesePavement #GreatYarmouth #ArtTrail #HistoryInStone #InternationalNews #ReprezentProject
