A complex venture. Sustainability and heritage goals are to be applauded, however, there is much local concern for the numerous farms included. Productive farmland and local community values (which are immeasurable in financial terms)) must never be sacrificed chasing 'green jdeals'. Hopefully there'll be a sensible middle ground.
Today, The Wildlife Trusts completed the purchase of part of the historic Rothbury Estate in Northumberland – with plans to secure the whole estate for the nation. An important place in the hearts of Northumbrians, the land – which includes the popular Simonside Hills – is home to rare and endangered wildlife including curlews, bilberry bumblebees, emperor moths and red squirrels. Over the coming months, The Wildlife Trusts nationally and Northumberland Wildlife Trust plan to buy the whole estate, so that we can preserve its rich heritage for future generations and create sustainable futures with the local community, who we’ll be consulting throughout. We’ve launched a fundraising appeal to make these next steps a reality and would love for you to join us on this exciting journey!
