Green Alliance
Public Policy Offices
Independent think tank working to accelerate political action for a green and prosperous UK.
About us
Green Alliance is an independent think tank focused on ambitious leadership for the environment. Since 1979, we have been working with a growing network of influential leaders in business, NGOs and politics to stimulate new thinking and dialogue on environmental policy, and increase political action and support for environmental solutions in the UK. Our projects involve in-depth research and advocacy, often in partnership with other organisations and interests. Our high profile events and specialist seminars provide important opportunities for dialogue with key decision makers. We also co-ordinate Greener UK, a new coalition of major environmental groups focused on achieving a good outcome for the environment during Brexit.

Today the government have published new guidelines for delivering on the UK's 30by30 target to protect land and sea for nature: https://bit.ly/3Aeoyk7. 🌍🌿 Comment from Ruth Chambers, senior fellow: Ruth Chambers, senior fellow at Green Alliance, commented: “The government is wise to rethink how it will protect at least 30 per cent of our land and sea for nature by 2030, a commitment which will play a vital role in nature’s recovery. It’s especially important that the government is clarifying which areas count as protected: only a third of those currently designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest, for example, were in favourable condition last year." "We now need to see how the government will use the farming budget to support farmers to manage more land for nature, in line with the new guidance. With the right support and proper monitoring, this could be a game changer for some of our most degraded nature sites.” #NatureRecovery #30by30 #Biodiversity

In the fourth #GAblog in our #COP16 miniseries, Elliot Chapman-Jones, head of public affairs at The Wildlife Trusts. discusses the need to move beyond ambitious biodiversity targets to actual implementation and action through concrete measures, adequate funding and political will. "The ambition of the latest targets in the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) is welcome. All nations need to dramatically up their game on protecting and restoring nature, but the true test will be effective implementation by those nations. That’s why the current UN Biodiversity Conference COP16 is so crucial. It’s the first opportunity for the world to take stock of monitoring and progress towards the GBF." 🌎 💡 🍃 🕊️ My contribution to the #GAblog miniseries on #COP16. The theme of this year’s UN global biodiversity summit is Peace with Nature. At the start of the last Conference in Montreal in 2022, UN Environmental Programme Executive Director, Inger Andersen, made the memorable statement, “we are at war with nature” and must “make peace.” Two years on, it seems little has changed and despite its centrality to life on earth, our war with nature is ongoing. The new UK government has vowed to change the state of nature. It is reviewing a major plan for environmental improvement to make it fit for purpose. This provides an immediate opportunity to embed 30 by 30 and other global goals in our domestic framework. #nature #peace #COP16 https://lnkd.in/epXhQCKm

In the third #GAblog in our #COP16 miniseries, senior fellow Ruth Chambers argues the need to embed nature protection within the UK’s environmental and economic plans, outlining that a healthy economy depends fundamentally on a healthy environment. "At the start of the last Conference, COP15 in Montreal in 2022, UN Environmental Programme Executive Director, Inger Andersen, made the memorable statement, “we are at war with nature” and must “make peace.” Two years on, it seems little has changed and despite its centrality to life on earth, our war with nature is ongoing". The concept of nature-positive sectoral pathways is gaining a lot of traction at #COP16 and we expect a lot of progress in this space between now and COP17. I've attended at least ten panel events this week that highlighted the need for sectoral pathways. TNFD's newly published draft guidance on nature transition plans identifies the lack of nature-positive sectoral pathways as a key gap in the existing policy framework. https://lnkd.in/d3YC4qBt Nature-positive pathways are essential to enable the private sector to manage transition risk and redirect financial flows. Together with Aviva, Green Finance Institute, and many environmental NGOs we're calling on the UK government to develop sectoral pathways for key economic sector. Finance for Biodiversity and Business for Nature have issued separate calls encouraging governments globally to develop sectoral pathways. You can learn more about sectoral pathways and why we need them in our latest blog article published by Green Alliance and in our recent report with Aviva: https://lnkd.in/dj6GDgv4 Thanks Green Alliance and Alice Stafford for!
In our second #GAblog on the major talking points around #COP16, Vassilis Gkoumas, economist at WWF-UK, outlines why aligning private investment and action with the Global Biodiversity Framework is crucial for addressing biodiversity loss. Read here: https://lnkd.in/gnDkPG2K
