Independent think tank working to accelerate political action for a green and prosperous UK.

About us

Green Alliance is an independent think tank focused on ambitious leadership for the environment. Since 1979, we have been working with a growing network of influential leaders in business, NGOs and politics to stimulate new thinking and dialogue on environmental policy, and increase political action and support for environmental solutions in the UK. Our projects involve in-depth research and advocacy, often in partnership with other organisations and interests. Our high profile events and specialist seminars provide important opportunities for dialogue with key decision makers. We also co-ordinate Greener UK, a new coalition of major environmental groups focused on achieving a good outcome for the environment during Brexit.

New research 🏥🌍 Today, we're launching two reports funded by Wellcome Trust on the often overlooked climate and health intersection. To 'build an NHS fit for the future', the government must address the physical and mental health challenges posed by climate change. Government action is needed to limit and adapt to rising temperatures, reduce NHS costs, improve public health and wellbeing & make our towns and cities greener. On top of that, the toll climate change and extreme weather takes on our mental health is under reported and significant. This isn’t just eco-anxiety, but can lead to PTSD, depression and can worsen symptoms of those with existing mental health problems. Head of Politics at Green Alliance

Party conferences already feel like the far-distant past, but I've written a blog about just how strange I felt they were - the vibes were muddled, nobody was sure what to think and yet passion for acting on the climate and nature crises shone through. We can only hope the final line on a strong cross-party consensus on action to reach net zero and deal with the crises facing us remains true in the months and years ahead 👇 👇

From some unexpected pessimism at Labour to a strangely upbeat atmosphere at Conservative, Holly Brazier Tope, head of politics, recounts the experience of being at this years party conferences, and whether there was cross-party ambition on the environment at them, on the blog. In an otherwise confusing conference season, the cross party environmental mission was clear

I’ve been helping the team to develop this programme of (free!) support for people influencing climate and environmental politics and policy in the UK. We hope some of it might be useful to those of you working on tangential (and related) issues too. It will feature lots of specialists with deep knowledge of Westminster and Whitehall sharing insight and expertise, but also create space for reflection, peer support and nurturing the connections we humans need to do great work. We have lots planned but also plan to be responsive to people’s needs. So if you or people you know might benefit from other kinds of support from us - do let us know and we’ll do what we can to help. Last month, our head of economy Steve Coulter spoke at The Conduit's #GreenJobsRevolution event, on a panel about green skills. 🌱💪 Education and training are essential to prepare both current and future workers for new green jobs, and in this session, the panel highlighted how collaborative efforts can close the skills gap and ensure a fair transition for everyone. Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy

It was brilliant to join Green Alliance UK to set out the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s vision for a greener, fairer city. From retrofitting homes to cleaning our waterways, we’re working with Government, boroughs and Londoners to make our city greener and more resilient by 2030. That’s why the Mayor asked Emma Howard Boyd CBE to prepare the London Climate Resilience Review which made clear we need to act now. The review contains 50 recommendations requiring action from different stakeholders across London. We’re working through the recommendations now and addressing them will be a real priority for coming Mayoral term.

Yesterday we launched two reports on the links between health and climate change at a conference funded by Wellcome Trust. Here's some highlights 👇 Blanche Shackleton, our strategy and partnerships director, opened by the first panel by discussing the far-reaching impacts of climate change on health and health services, leading to a discussion on cross-sector collaboration. 🏛️ Rosa Hodgkin, researcher at Institute for Government, noted that we need to emphasise the monetary savings to 10 Downing Street and HM Treasury of early action, and the need for specific objectives to achieve cross-departmental success (eg, increasing electric vehicle uptake to reduce air pollution and improve health). 🩺 Tamsin Ellis, GP and director of Greener Practice, highlighted the need for better support and resources for medical professionals working on climate issues. 🧠 Emma Lawrance, mental health lead at Institute of Global Health Innovation, spoke on the mental health impacts of climate change and the need for integrated support beyond typical healthcare (eg, insurance for farmers to reduce weather-related stress). Shaun Spiers chaired the second panel on health and climate adaptation, focusing on London. 📉 Emma Howard Boyd CBE, chair of London Climate Resilience Review and ClientEarth, stressed the urgency of preparing for extreme weather and the importance of proper adaptation to protect investments. 👥 Mete Coban MBE, deputy mayor of London for environment and energy Greater London Authority, emphasised the need to view climate action through the lens of social, racial and economic justice, saying "so many people in my community have been impacted by climate change but don't even know it". Alistair Strathern MP, chair of APPG Environment , then spoke on Labour's ambition to lead on climate and health, and the importance of listening to impacted individuals and experts. He added "It's my job to make sure this gets it fair share of the hearing and I look forward to this being the first of many conversations with you all". Roz Bulleid chaired the final panel on climate adaptation and its health benefits. 🔍 Sophie O'Connell, senior policy adviser, provided an overview of the reports and the recommendations to government within them. 📍 Emer OConnell, public health lead for planning, climate and resilience at GLA Group Public Heath Unit emphasised the need for data to motivate governmental action. ❤️🩹 Subashini M, medical director at Aviva, called for government direction on minimum action requirements and highlighted the monetary benefits of early action. Thank you to all who attended and contributed to the discussions on this often overlooked aspect of climate change.
