🌍 The Dual Role of AI: Driving Sustainable Development, But Needing Responsible Oversight. Global card payment fraud (both in person and online) continues to rise year after year. In 2023, UK Finance reported that contactless fraud in the UK surged by 82%. One significant factor behind this alarming trend is the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in fraud schemes. While AI plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable development, enhancing efficiencies in sectors like energy, agriculture, and health, it also poses new risks. AI technologies are being exploited for unauthorized biometric identification, social scoring, and even cognitive behavioral manipulation, which are unacceptable risks for societies. The United Nations has recognized these dangers and has formed an AI Advisory Body to tackle these global challenges. We must ensure AI continues to fuel progress while also being developed and regulated responsibly to prevent its misuse.
