🌿 From Academia to Consultancy: My Reflections One Year on 🌿 I want to mark one year since I took the leap from over a decade in academia to a role in environmental consultancy at Greengage Environmental Ltd while continuing my work at UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources. Transitioning from academic research to real-world application has been immensely rewarding, allowing me to apply my research experience into practice across various projects in London and further afield. I've enjoyed setting biodiversity targets, developing nature reporting frameworks, and testing new monitoring technologies around the city I grew up in and love. Applying the theoretical work from my academic career to tangible outcomes for nature and people has filled a significant gap in my feelings of satisfaction and joy in my work. There have been many new things to learn, from working with clients to delivering innovative work in much shorter timeframes than I've been used to in academia. The chance to feel like I'm making a difference for people and nature, surrounded by an incredible team, has been excellent. This post is my way of saying thank you to Greengage Environmental Ltd and Morgan Taylor for taking a chance on me and my amazing colleagues for helping me settle into this new industry. I'm excited to see what the next year holds, hopefully lots of exciting projects doing innovative and impactful things with great colleagues. 🏘 How do we deliver regenerative communities?   There’s so much fantastic discussion going on in this space, and we were thrilled to take part in a recent panel discussion here in #Bristol hosted by Greengage Environmental Ltd   We stressed the need for meaningful for community engagement, creating thriving places over spaces, and being brave when it comes to setting sustainability targets. It is possible to build low carbon homes at scale.    As a #BCorp developer, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve. And this is vital. For those who couldn't make it, these were the main talking points... *'The shift to regenerative practices represents a significant evolution beyond mere sustainability. The conversation is moving from a focus on achieving "no net loss" to a proactive stance on attaining net gains. *While sustainability remains critical, we must accelerate our efforts to secure a climate-resilient future. *Investors are increasingly demanding that developments and projects meet not just sustainability criteria but also higher standards of regenerative practices. This shift arises from their need to mitigate investment risks. *Although cost continues to present challenges, the price of inaction is expected to far outweigh the costs associated with proactive measures, a realisation many investors are beginning to grasp. *Additionally, users are increasingly seeking more sustainable, climate-resilient, and socially inclusive end products.
