A new standard for timber architecture 🪵 Katajanokan Laituri, a new timber building in Helsinki, has cemented Finland’s position as leader in sustainable architecture. The four-storey building is constructed from around 7,500 cubic metres of wood, comprising almost 3,000 wooden elements, combining cross-laminated #timber (CLT) and laminated veneer lumber. It houses a hotel, restaurant and office facilities whilst acting as a flood barrier due to its prominent sea facing position. Benefits of using timber in construction: ♻️ Reduced emissions - wood absorbs a net 1,700 kilos of CO2 from the atmosphere, over and above the energy expended in growing, harvesting, and processing ⚡ Reduced energy consumption - wood’s unique cellular structure makes it ten times more insulating than concrete 🏗️ Superior construction qualities - engineered timber such as CLT are comparable to concrete and steel, allowing bigger buildings to be built with wood https://lnkd.in/eAhsFVaS #forestry #crosslaminatedtimber

"Despite growing investment in battery storage in many markets globally, further flexibility measures, including long-term storage and large-scale demand-response will be necessary in order to reach global targets" ⚡ The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released their latest annual Renewables 2024 report, highlighting the vast expansion of renewable energy, with more than 5,500GW of new capacity set to be added globally between 2024 and 2030 and the necessary changes to current infrastructure that are needed in order to meet this goal. Key takeaways from the report included: 🔀 Further flexibility measures, including long-term storage and large-scale demand-response, will be necessary for expansion 🪙 Investment in grid infrastructure is lagging, with more advanced projects waiting to be connected, though grid reforms in some countries are beginning to deliver results.
