Last week ended with some exciting news for UK #circularity — the full extended producer responsibility for packaging (#pEPR) regulations were officially laid in parliament 🏛 The finalised plans provide much-needed clarity on the #EPR rollout, which will unblock investment and preparation across the resource value chain 🔗 💡 Brands and packaging producers have concrete guidelines to help plan targeted investments in more sustainable product design — now, with economic incentives tied to #recyclability, it has never been more important to measure how products perform through data 👀 ♻️ The waste sector, which will play a pivotal role in enforcing EPR regulation, can continue preparing for sampling increases in more confidence. Along with recent changes to the #MF sampling requirements, clearer #EPR regulation will encourage more facilities to embrace automated sampling and reporting 🚀 Here’s what Harry Rhys Davies, who keeps an eye on policy at Greyparrot, had to say about the announcement: “Getting pEPR over line in the UK is a huge achievement, one which will pave the way for smarter, more responsible packaging waste practices that align us more closely with our European partners. We’ve already seen that this has been a tremendously successful model in other markets, encouraging brands to rethink packaging design for sustainability, as well as promoting innovation in waste. This is a major step towards transparency and accountability across the packaging sector, which, in turn, benefits us all.“

Greyparrot is using AI waste analytics to unlock a new understanding of discarded resources called waste intelligence.
About us
Greyparrot [greyparrot.ai], the leader in AI waste analytics, is applying AI to globally scale recycling and save millions of tonnes of waste from landfills and incinerators. By providing deeper, more intelligent insights about waste stream composition and financial value, Greyparrot is helping the waste sector recover more value from waste processing lines and reduce the environmental impact of waste. The company’s waste intelligence platform, including Greyparrot Analyzer and Greyparrot Sync (API), reveals real-time insights on over 70 waste categories across seven layers of data, including financial value, brand, and GHG emissions, captured at multiple locations across a recycling facility. In 2023, Greyparrot analysed over 25 billion waste objects helping drive efficiency to save hundreds of thousands, to millions, of dollars per facility – while diverting millions of tonnes of waste away from landfills, oceans, and incinerators. Using Greyparrot insights, recycling professionals, plant builders, packaging producers, and FMCG brands can make decisions to help them increase recycling efficiency, comply with recycling regulations, and improve recyclable packaging design. Greyparrot is recognised as: - Global Cleantech 100 2024 - World Economic Forum “Tech Pioneer” 2021 - PWC “NetZero Future 50” 2022 - WIRED “Europe's 100 Hottest Startups” 2021 - CB Insights “Top 100 most promising AI company globally” 2021

Along with many of our colleagues in the waste sector, our CEO, Mikela Druckman, celebrates the ban of single-use vapes 🎉 🔋 We hope that policymakers can leverage objective waste data to proactively identify emerging product trends that may pose environmental risks when binned 🔥 🚮
Just over a year ago, I spoke with James Tapper for an article in The Guardian on the rising environmental threat of single-use #vapes 🚭 . Beyond being a litter issue, their lithium batteries 🔋 spark hundreds of fires annually in recovery facilities.🔥 🎉 That’s why it was fantastic news to hear that England and Wales will ban single-use vapes starting 1 June 2025! 🗓️ 🎉 While this is a major step forward, the issue goes beyond vapes—#batteries are found in countless products these days 🔋. Many supermarkets, libraries, and commercial sites offer battery recycling options, and I’ve found https://lnkd.in/eZeiu3_m to be a great resource for locating safe disposal sites 🔄 . It’s encouraging to see decisive regulation tackling this issue ✅. My hope is that we can stay ahead of emerging product trends that bring unexpected waste challenges. https://lnkd.in/e6Ux9nu3

🚀 Greyparrot joined The ReAssembly, hosted by Regeneration.VC, to discuss how #AI and #ML are transforming material recovery and waste reduction. 🌍 Greyparrot's Co-founder Ambarish Mitra, alongside Charlie Vallel (CEO, SmarterX) and Ellie McDonald (G2 Venture Partners) explored the impact of advanced AI. ♻️ 💡 Key topics 💡: 🔵 The logistics, infrastructure gaps in waste management, and health risks for waste workers 🔵 The lack of standardisation in product design impacting downstream recycling 🔵 Recycling facilities designed 20+ years ago struggling with new materials and waste influx 🔵 The "green premium": Will consumers pay more for sustainability? 💡 Ambarish highlighted these key points💡: 🟢 We must reframe “value” and “desirability” in #circularity. How do we shift consumer priorities? 🟢 The scale of the issue: 2B+ tonnes of waste generated annually, with outdated systems still relying on manual sorting. The industry needs automation now. 🟢 Introduced the Greyparrot Analyzer as a game-changing solution, set to analyse over 50B+ items this year in #recycling plants worldwide, helping waste managers divert waste from landfills and providing global brands with critical insights on packaging and #EPR compliance. It was a productive discussion highlighting the urgent need to address the aftermath of consumption, which is deeply connected to #biodiversity loss and #climatechange. Thank you to Michael Smith and the team for providing the platform for this important discussion. We’re already looking forward to The ReAssembly 2025!
