London-based award-winning architectural practice delivering exemplary mixed-use and residential developments

About us

GRID is a 60 strong practice of architects and urban designers with a proven track record of designing and delivering exemplary residential and mixed-use developments. We have a range of commissions from masterplanning to interiors, with many new designs being developed while completing a programme of 8 projects in the next 12 months. Based in studios in London’s cultural Bankside, GRID undertakes projects across the UK and overseas with particular success in competitions. Formed in 2010, with projects like Brewery Square in Clerkenwell and Montrose Place in Victoria as a legacy, the practice has been on a steady growth pattern to reflect competition success. The founders continue to drive the practice with a new and talented generation of architects already having had success in competitions. GRID was formed as a studio of people and avoids the ‘personality quest’ of most practices - hence the practice name. It is run in a democratic and collaborative way with all members having knowledge of the business and a say in the future direction and success. Our confirmed view that architecture is pragmatic, flexible and most of all human, has separated us from practices that see buildings as personal, stylistic statements. We are urbanists first and foremost with experience in designing beautiful buildings in parts of cities, and creating parts of cities with beautiful buildings. Our architecture is seamlessly coordinated, and carefully detailed while being commercially successful. Good buildings are inspiring to use and contribute to better cities and lifestyles. The big idea is that a practice that recognises the architect as a specialist, and not a general practitioner, can more effectively create procedures and conditions that encourage excellence. Our research and investment is focused in the residential and commercial mixed-use sector.

GRID's design for 80-100 Gwynne Road was approved by the London Borough of Wandsworth's planning committee last night. The project, for our client URE Group, re-provides 100% of the existing light industrial space on the site within a two storey podium. This integrates industrial and residential entrances within a series of arched openings, reflecting the local context. Rising above this base are two connected residential buildings: - A lower deck access building provides 18 dual aspect affordable rented apartments. These have full length south facing balconies and the rear deck overlooks the podium level courtyard garden. - A 20 storey point block provides private and intermediate flats, bringing the development total to 88 apartments (with over 35% affordable housing). There are four apartments per floor providing 100% dual aspect at the upper levels, and views to the nearby River Thames. The top of the point block also has arched forms to create a distinct appearance, which relates to the base. This project will provide valuable employment space and has maximised the number of much needed new homes on this brownfield site. It is the 9th consecutive consent that GRID has achieved in Wandsworth in the past few years. Please contact director Colin Veitch (07880 746112) if you have a Wandsworth site where our expertise in this borough could be applied. #wandsworth #UREgroup #savills #terrapin #campbellreith #Irvineering #TurkingtonMartin #point2

Creative reuse of an existing building in Kingston GRID's expertise in converting, extending and reusing existing buildings was put to the test at 146-152 Clarence Street in Kingston Upon Thames. The brief was to maximise the residential opportunity of the upper floors whilst maintaining the operation of a Wilko store (at the time) on the lower floors. As our video shows: - The structural grid and facade worked perfectly for residential to be inserted at the three upper floors - The concrete frame had capacity for three extra floors - The set back top floor allowed us to give the building a 'crown' This project will deliver 55 dwellings in the centre of Kingston. #highgatecapital #bmor #aon #kingston #reuse #retrofit #ReesPartnershipDesign #LUC

Who loves a real model? There's something wonderful about a hand crafted model of a development. This model shows the Arundel Street elevation of our 190 Strand project for St Edward Homes, completed in 2017, it was the first purpose built housing project on the Strand for 100 years. The model was useful to show Westminster officers the relationship of the proposals to the Grade I listed St Clement Danes Church. It also showed how the mansion block typology 'repaired' Arundel Street and defined two courtyards within the development. #stedwardhomes #berkeleyhomes #berkeleygroup #westminstercitycouncil #wpa #westminsterpropertyassociation

https://lnkd.in/eTKqcxFM A great evening at the 2024 Planning Awards last night. Brook House was the Winner in the Planning for Affordable Housing Category. This project is now on site, and will soon deliver 102 homes which are: ·        100% affordable rent ·        100% dual aspect ·        100% for women This was a great brief to work on from our amazing client Women’s Pioneer Housing, supported by L&Q, acting as the Development Manager , who appointed and managed the design team. We had excellent collaboration with the consultant team throughout the process, particularly Sphere 25, the planning consultants. #planningawards #winner #housing #affordablehousing #communityengagement #architects #design #teamwork #Womenspioneerhousing #Sphere25 #LandQ

This amazing mixed use development is coming alive! It's good to see that the GP Surgery is now open - it looks great from the outside. Along with recent lettings of the retail units, Repton Garden's contribution to the Wembley streetscape is starting to grow. This is what we envisaged back in 2017 when we conceived of a development with the maximum amount of active frontage on all four sides. Visit our website to see our 3d sketch which explains how all of this street activity hides the car parking within. https://lnkd.in/edNtdz8x #Quintain #btr #WembleyPark #Placemaking #Brent #Community

On Friday we were proud to celebrate the opening of the new GP Surgery at Wembley Park, now the largest NHS GP surgery in North West London. This state-of-the-art facility is located on the ground floor of Repton Gardens, our latest BtR development and this year’s winner of RESI’s Development of the Year. The surgery will serve up to 25,000 patients, increasing the local healthcare capacity by over 30%. The surgery boasts almost 11,000 sq ft of advanced medical space, including 14 consult exam rooms, two clinical suites, four treatment rooms and an e-consult room, offering modern care tailored to community needs. The new GP surgery will increase high-quality healthcare provision in the borough of Brent for residents new and old in a purpose-built facility. From its inception, our masterplan at Wembley Park sought to provide everything local residents need to live healthy, happy lives in their neighbourhood. The opening of this surgery signifies an important milestone in the delivery of Wembley Park’s sustainable neighbourhood, which will provide residents all the community facilities they need within easy reach. #WembleyPark #Placemaking #Brent #Community

We are pleased to have been appointed as the main contractor on a new affordable homes scheme at Gunnersbury Lane for L&Q, one of the UK’s leading housing associations and developers, on behalf of Women's Pioneer Housing. Brook House will comprise 102 new homes over 15 storeys and is located opposite Acton Town Underground Station. The homes will be let at social rents to single women by Women’s Pioneer Housing, a specialised housing association founded in 1920 by suffragists. The organisation aims to support women who face inequality, abuse and disadvantages, especially in the housing market.   Initial works will involve the demolition of existing buildings on the site, which have become uneconomic to repair and are unsuitable for refurbishment. We will aim to minimise disruption throughout the construction of these new homes and our community liaison team will keep in regular contact with local residents and businesses. We will also maximise opportunities to contribute positively to the local community throughout this scheme, particularly in relation to education, employment and skills development.     Architects GRID Architects Structural Eng Frame Engineers  PM Silver - Development and Construction Consultancy Tanja Pfitzner #loveconstruction #socialhousing #womenshousing
