It was 7.51am on Friday 12 January 2007, in the middle of the morning rush hour, when a baseball-capped busker opened his case and started playing, just inside L’Enfant Plaza Metro entrance in the busy centre of Washington DC. Over a period of 43 minutes, the violinist performed six classical pieces, two from Bach pieces, one Massenet, and one each from Schubert and Ponce. Out of 1,097 people that passed by, 27 gave money, and only seven actually stopped and listened for any length of time. In total, the busker made $52.17 The violinist was Grammy winning virtuoso Joshua Bell, he was playing a 300 year old Stradivarius, known as the 'Gibson ex Huberman' worth over $3 million. The message? Look up, take your headphone off, appreciate now...slow down! https://lnkd.in/gfYmWjQq

https://lnkd.in/eMVb7tJA "Oxford Street to be pedestrianised" As someone who spent 13+ years working in and around the retail mecca that is Oxford Street, I have heard this one before...I truly hope that this IS the time. This should be the catalyst that landlords and retailers need to invest in prime retail business. Over the past 15-20 years Regent Street has bounded ahead of Oxford Street, in terms of look, feel and line-up. This is despite having the power house that is Selfridges sat weightily down the road. Removing traffic from Oxford Street gives the opportunity to create a free flowing, green and dynamic shopping space. Pop up opportunities a-plenty- F&B and other exciting retailer offerings. The key, if this is confirmed (big if), is for landlords to invest in Oxford Street. Improve the line up, improve the shop fronts, make it a World beating street. What's your view?

For such a great union of countries we don't half get things wrong in the UK. The British fashion manufacturing industry has a long and brilliant history, with many successes. Not too many of late though. What needs to be done to bring fashion manufacturing back to the UK, with the right prices for retailers AND the right pay and conditions for workers? We need to make Made in Britain mean something again. https://lnkd.in/e3adRdZx

Yet another example of the challenges facing UK retailers. The report highlights that exports of clothing and footwear sold to EU countries have fallen from £7.4bn in 2019 to £2.7bn in 2023, a shocking drop. Albeit some has been driven by changing production and logistics models. It still means fewer jobs in the UK. It still means less revenue collected by the HMRC Let's hope some positive changes can be made post election. Looking through a positive prism...GTR Stock has some great connections with UK and EU off-price and liquidation partners. If you have excess or non-trading stocks please get in touch and let's add a few pounds to those export numbers!

Well done to Wolves for a great campaign highlighting suicide and mental health issues. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people, especially in males, and the rates are going in the wrong direction. In a retail world of buy-outs, efficiencies, restructures, redundancies and administrations, there is much more space for insecurities, troubled thoughts and seemingly insurmountable barriers. Don't let these thoughts get ahead of you. Find that person you can talk to- friend, family or a professional; it doesn't matter who. It's good to talk. It's good to listen.

Interesting article in Drapers regarding the strength and growth of the Outlet business. I love the outlets and see potential on top of the positive trading numbers. So much opportunity, when it's done right. Can high streets and centres landlords to offer more flexible turnover based deals to fill some doors? Is the customer feeling the pinch or just more savvy? With the volumes of made for outlet product growing, can brands back up their claims outlets help their sustainability? https://lnkd.in/e59G5rHf

I love this story...although many versions of it have done the rounds. Did it start in a hallway full of balloons, rather than a fancy balloon drop in a spacious atrium? Never mind the origins, it's a great human experiment, with a brilliant, life affirming message. Shared goals achieve results. Let GTR Stock share your goals, the aim to have an effective trading stock package. Let me work to clear your aged stock, excess in-season product, liability lines stuck in factories or ports, samples, returns, imperfect stocks...Working with off-price and liquidation partners around the World. All you've got to do is find a balloon with my name on it...🎈 ...or just email me? gavinrichards@gtrstock.com

    Founder & CEO @Paolo | Growing Startups 🚀

A university professor posed a challenge to his students. Each of them had a balloon with their name. The balloons would fall from the ceiling and they would have 5 minutes to find theirs. If everyone found the one with their name, they won... if not, they lost. Although they tried with all their energy to find them, no one succeeded. The teacher put the balloons back and told them, "When you catch a balloon, give it to its owner". The test took less than 3 minutes to complete. The teacher finished by saying, "Happiness is like these balloons. If each of us looks only for our own, we will never find it. But if we look for others', we will also find ours." Exactly the same happens with teamwork in companies. If you help others achieve their goals, others will do the same with you. Do you like my content?
