👻 With Halloween becoming more and more popular every year, it’s shocking to learn that buying just one new Halloween costume every year generates enough carbon to heat your home for an entire month. Our latest research at Gumtree.com featured on Daily Mirror this morning also highlights that 46 million Halloween items could be thrown away every single year after just one use. That’s why we’re calling on the nation to think about their purchases this Halloween and think of second hand first – to save both money and the planet 🌍 What will you buy second hand this Halloween? #Halloween #SecondHand #Preloved #Sustainability #CircularEconomy https://lnkd.in/egY3PQ-X
About us
At Gumtree, we’re proud to have spent the last 20 years helping to make ‘Good Finds’ happen for millions of people across the UK. From motors to sofas, records to roommates, connecting people to what they need, when they need is what a Good Find is all about - even if that does sometimes mean the occasional advert with a typo in a headline or a thumb over the camera lens. Over the years we’ve helped start next chapters, supported communities and small businesses and encouraged people to embrace a culture of re-commerce, where we waste less, share more and help each other out in small ways. With over 1.8m ads live on the platform at any time, it’s probably no surprise that we believe that everything can find new purpose, and we’re on a mission to make buying and selling second hand simpler, safer and more enjoyable for every single one of our 11m monthly users. With a team of 185 people working from our Richmond riverside office (plus a few more working for our sister brand Motors.co.uk in Abingdon, Oxfordshire). We’re a diverse bunch of super friendly and talented individuals, always on the lookout for our next ‘Good Find”; talent who want to join our community and drive the re-commerce revolution, open up opportunities for our users and help people find what they’re looking for. If you’re motivated and full of ideas for how you could help make more Good Finds happen on Gumtree then we’d love to hear from you! At Gumtree.com, we know just how expensive the festive season 🎄 can get - and how often gifts and presents end up in landfill (£42 million worth of presents each year to be precise). 🌍 To offset both the financial and environmental impact of buying multiple gifts for loved ones that may be thrown away or wasted, our consumer expert Hannah Rouch spoke to The Independent to share her top tips on how to be savvy when shopping second hand this Christmas. It may only be October, but it’s never too early to start planning - listings for Christmas decorations on Gumtree.com increased by a third in September, with over 50,000 listings mentioning Christmas on the site already! https://lnkd.in/erC7qw54 #Christmas #SecondHand #Preloved #Sustainability #CircularEconomy

Did you know that electrical waste is the fastest growing source of waste in the world - with unwanted, broken cables containing an average of 20% copper which can be used and recycled for other items? We're excited to be part of this initiative which echoes Gumtree.com's commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle materials. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Reduce #Reuse #Recycle
Is your employer getting involved in The Great Cable Challenge this October? We’re seeing so many brands across the UK coming together this International E-Waste Day to help tackle e-waste. 🌎🔌 National organisations like Virgin Media O2, B&Q, Gumtree.com and Fora are all making it easy for their employees by organising office pop-up collections to recycle cables and other old electricals. The Great Cable Challenge is running throughout October – so it’s not too late to get your employer involved! 💡⚡Download our toolkit to access our communications materials, or to find out how to organise a collection in your office: https://bit.ly/480pjtr For more information on how your organisation can take part, contact nick@materialfocus.org.uk. #GreatCableChallenge #RecycleYourElectricals #EWasteDay #WEEEForum

ICYMI: It’s been a bumper September for retail sales which are up 2% - the highest increase in the past 6 months, supposedly driven by back to school shopping. 🎒 And this all in #SecondHandSeptember, which shows that - despite the high profile fashion shows at #LFW and countless celebrity endorsements for the campaign - we continue to have an over consumption problem in the UK. 🌍 💡 Did you know that there are already enough clothes in existence to dress the next six generations? Or that 30% of unwanted clothes end up in landfill, a total of 1.2 million tonnes of textiles every year? And as we gear up for Halloween, did you know that buying just one new costume generates enough carbon to heat your home for an entire month this winter? 🎃 These are all shocking stats that should be enough to make shoppers think #SecondHandFirst and keep our shopping habits in check. But sadly it doesn’t seem to be the case. Has #SecondHandSeptember had a lasting impact on your shopping habits? How will you shop #preloved first? #SecondHand #Sustainability #ConsciousConsumption https://lnkd.in/e2UWBFkp

💡 This time last week our Gumtree.com Product & Tech colleagues hosted their very first AI Hackathon event, supported by the Google Cloud team. 💻 The aim of the #hackathon was to explore the possibilities of using #AI to solve real world issues for both buyers and sellers on Gumtree.com, with three teams looking at distinct opportunities for using AI to improve the efficiency, personalisation and usability of those journeys. 🎉 The event was a resounding success and a rewarding experience for all attendees, giving them time to think outside of the day job and collaborate together in new ways. Now, when’s the next one?! #Tech #Hackathon #AI #ProblemSolving #CircularEconomy

It’s disappointing to see the latest news on The Guardian this week that recycling rates in England are decreasing, with only 44% of all household waste recycled in the UK ♻ 💡 Our most recent Gumtree.com report investigated council recycling rates across the UK and found that only 8% of all bulky home and garden waste was recycled with 23 councils admitting to recycling nothing! It's clear greater transparency and better adoption of the #CircularEconomy are desperately needed to tackle our growing problem with waste. We must stop our throw-away culture and encourage everyone to THINK BEFORE WE BUY – particularly as we move in to the busiest retail period of the year. 🎄 What do you do to reduce, reuse and recycle more? #CircularEconomy #ReduceReuseRecycle #SecondHand https://lnkd.in/eTrQhyft

Did you know that 45% of climate goals can only be met by tackling consumption habits? That means that the #CircularEconomy has a huge role to play in order to reduce our carbon consumption and look after our 🌍 . 💡 That's why it was fantastic to see and hear lots of conversation yesterday at the #LabourPartyConference about the #CircularEconomy and the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling materials - a mission that is close to our hearts. Thinking #SecondHand first - whether through renting clothes, or reselling kids toys - can save an estimated 10.9 billion kgs carbon, enough to give everyone in the UK a daily hot shower for the next 6 months. 🚿 It's a no brainer to us. What will you do to reduce your consumption habits? #CircularEconomy #SecondHandSeptember #CarbonConsumption #LPC24

🌍 As #LondonFashionWeek comes to a close today, it’s been amazing to see the message of sustainable fashion at the forefront thanks to the likes of Oxfam and Vinted hosting their own second hand fashion shows. 👗 With enough clothes already in existence to dress the next six generations and over 1000 new items added to certain fast fashion sites every single day, there’s more all of us could be doing to adopt sustainable fashion in our everyday lives to reduce waste and our collective impact on the planet. This #SecondHandSeptember, we wanted to shine a spotlight on incredible clothes swapping services such as #TheBigSwap who are on a mission to encourage people to consider what they already have and shift what they no longer use - thinking of #circularfashion as their first choice to reduce waste. #ConsciousCloset is also doing similar things in this space, aiming to help fashion conscious people consume more mindfully. Has London Fashion Week inspired you to think differently about how you shop? Tell us who has! #SecondHandSeptember #Fastfashion #ConsciousConsumption

Sadly, it's not just fast fashion that's having an impact on the planet, it's fast homeware too. Check out our Chief Marketing Officer Hannah Rouch's thoughts on #SecondHandSeptember and read more here https://lnkd.in/eYZS_DF5
Fast fashion has long been a problem in the UK, with enough clothes in existence to dress the next six generations. You've probably heard that fact already? I’m as guilty as the next person when it comes to a new season. Especially in September! Scrolling through “new in” categories, eyeing up a new winter coat and I have to consciously remind myself of what I already own, what I simply don’t need and put my phone away! Since Oxfam launched Secondhand September and we’ve seen the positive impacts of second hand fashion elevated in mainstream media, and it’s great to see the category grow year on year. Not just through resale but major brands looking at circularity through a serious lens. But whilst the fashion industry is taking positive steps toward sustainability - great to see eBay popping up at LFW and greater adoption of rental through the likes of fashion platforms HURR and @ByRotation - the home and retail industry has been slower to follow suit. Mintel states that the UK home retail industry is going to be worth £19 million by 2028 and that 44% of shoppers bought homewares on impulse in the past year. Recent Gumtree research also found that if every person swapped their homeware purchases from new to second hand for just three months, we’d save an estimated 10.9kgs of carbon - enough for hot showers for the next six months. And that’s not all - buying just one seasonal cushion, think that festive cuddly cushion for Christmas - creates the equivalent carbon emissions as heating your house for almost a year, and that’s without the monetary savings shopping second hand can bring. That’s why this #SecondHandSeptember we are calling for greater awareness on the impact of fast homeware and challenging all consumers to think about reducing, reusing and recycling their homeware as we head toward the busiest retail moment of the year. ♻ Gumtree.com #gumtree https://lnkd.in/eYZS_DF5

💡 Did you know that 9 in 10 people regularly recycle items from their home - but recycling and reusing is so much more than popping plastics, cans and bottles in the right bin. There are some incredible brands recycling items into new products to save them from going to landfill. 🌍 As #SecondHandSeptember rolls on, we want to champion just some of the brilliant brands and organisations doing incredible things when it comes to reusing and recycling. Tackling the issue of plastic in our seas and beaches head on, Batoko make fun swimwear 🐬 from recycled plastic waste intercepted before heading to landfill. Kind Bag reuse pesky plastic bottles by using six of them (which have been turned into RPET fabric) for each reusable bag they create. And it’s not just clothing and accessories using recycled materials. Who Gives A Crap take the same ethos and apply it to toilet paper. Using 100% recycled post consumer paper meaning it’s crafted from school and office paper that’s already in circulation means they are using and reusing materials that already exist. Who else is leading the way with recycling and reusing existing materials? Who have we missed? #SecondHandSeptember #reusing #recycling #fashion #swimwear
