According to the World Health Organisation, e-waste is the one of the fastest growing solid waste streams in the world with over 62million tonnes produced last year. Just 22% of this waste is collected and recycled. Our gates use batteries and motors that need to be periodically replaced by our engineers to continue efficient operation. With 1000s of gates in operation across the country, our UK engineers were faced with a growing problem of how to dispose of these items. With batteries returned to our Maresfield facility for disposal, there was also a growing cost for sending these items to e-waste. Our Service Department Sustainability Champion, Ben Keegan, knew there had to be a better way and so has implemented a programme for the recycling of our old batteries and motors. Partnering with a specialist e-waste recycler capable of handling the specific types of batteries and motors we use, our items are now reclaimed to be turned into something new. Importantly, the programme is also easy for our engineers, ensuring that more units are recycled. Once our gates in the UK have been serviced by an engineer, they are sent to our Maresfield facility where they are stored in appropriate bins. When the bins are full, they are collected by our recycling partner to be separated and recycled. Containing materials such as lead and copper, batteries and motors have a high recycling value and so the programme is not only better for the environment, but it also pays back financially. Last month alone, we saw over 410kg of batteries, motors and circuit boards sent off to our specialist recycling partner, helping to cut down on e-waste. With the growing environmental and financial cost of e-waste, our battery and motor recycling programme is helping us move towards sending zero waste to landfill and to be a more sustainable business. #ewasteday #sustainability #recycling
