Absolutely thrilled to be awarded a BBSRC ALERT2024 grant to buy a cryoFIB-SEM! This was a brilliant team effort with Christiane Berger-Schaffitzel, Paul Verkade, Bertram Daum, Ufuk Borucu and Judith Mantell. This will be the first such instrument in the south-west of the UK. My first month after I started at the University of Bristol was spent travelling around and having fantastic discussions with my new colleagues in the GW4 Alliance. This resulted in more than 35 researchers from the University of Bristol, University of Exeter, University of Bath and Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd contributing projects and ideas, and really highlighted how cryoFIB-SEM, and in situ structural biology in particular, will have a bright and exciting future here in Bristol and the south-west! Researchers from the GW4 Alliance (Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter) have secured £2.6million to facilitate novel technologies into groundbreaking health research possibilities.

📢 GW4 Alliance researchers have successfully secured a total of £2.6million for 'game-changer' equipment which will open-up grounding breaking new health research possibilities. ▶️ https://buff.ly/4fXSEs8 The funding, awarded to two projects via BBSRC's ALERT funding scheme, will enable GW4 researchers to accelerate integrated understanding of health. 🔹 Led by Dr Thomas Sharp, Associate Professor at the University of Bristol, £1.5million has been awarded to install the region’s first cryo-focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (cryo-FIB-SEM), a revolutionary piece of equipment which will enable the use of novel technologies to improve research into topics such as the human immune system, animal-to-human transmitted diseases, and antimicrobial resistance. 🔹 Led by Dr Vicki Gold, Chair of the GW4 Cryo-EM Steering Group and Associate Professor in Biosciences at University of Exeter, a further £1.1million has been secured to replace their current cryo-EM, with the latest generation entry-level screening microscope, which will help to secure the future of the GW4 cryo-EM pipeline. The 'Poo-Sticks' project, led by University of Exeter PhD student, and GW4 AMR Alliance Network member, Elitsa Penkova, is looking for wild freshwater swimmers - and non-swimmers - to participate in a study to help understand and protect people from the health risks related to pollution: ➡ https://lnkd.in/eW8zFqXP 🔹 The project is aiming to understand how swimmers exposed to human sewage and animal run-off in rivers might be affected by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. 🏊♂️ 🔹 The team at ECEHH European Centre for Environment and Human Health want to hear from people who swim regularly in rivers, as well as those who prefer sticking to dry land. 🔹 Swimmers are also encouraged to invite non-swimmers of similar age and gender to take part, with those aged over 16 eligible to sign up – subject to eligibility. The Transforming Homes #GTE team have spent two days at our writing retreat focussing on outcomes from our first year of working together. Colleagues have managed to step away from their daily routines and immerse themselves in a supportive environment dedicated to writing and reflecting on our collaborative research. Led by Prof Jo Patterson, partners from University of Bath, Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, University of Exeter and University of Bristol planned and drafted outputs from our #research, which started in October 2023. We also spent some time identifying relevant events and conferences for colleagues to attend and speak at over the coming 15 months.
