The recent changes to employer National Insurance contributions and the national minimum wage have sparked a sharp fall in confidence among UK businesses. According to the CIPD, hiring confidence has plummeted, and redundancy intentions have surged over the past quarter. With almost a third of businesses planning to reduce their headcount, it's vital we understand the broader impact this is having. Key points from the research: 🔻Almost 1/3 of businesses aim to reduce headcount or slow recruitment plans🔻 ❗ 42% of employers expect to raise prices due to rising employment costs❗ 🔻A significant dip in the net employment balance has been noted, dropping from +21 to +13 overall🔻 Peter Cheese, chief executive at CIPD, highlighted this as "the most significant downward change in employer sentiment in the last 10 years, outside of the pandemic." Heavy workloads, time pressures, and balancing work with personal life are the main culprits. Here's a closer look: ✔ 64% of those aged 18-34 experience anxiety at least once a week. ✔ Only 32% of employees over 55 feel the same. ✔ 1 in 5 HR leaders face daily anxiety. What's fascinating is that 97% of interventions like leadership training have shown positive results. Yet, only 43% of employees received resilience training in the past year. Apprenticeships are making a real wave among young people! 🌊 According to a recent survey, over 70% of 16-to-24-year-olds would relocate for an apprenticeship. It's a clear sign that National Apprenticeship Week 2025 is aligning perfectly with the growing interest in these programmes. The Apprenticeship Barometer surveyed 2,000 young people across the country and found that: * ✅ 6 in 10 prefer apprenticeships over university. * ✅ 28% see job security as a major plus. * ✅ 54% cite "earning while learning" as the main attraction. It's incredible to see that 86% believe apprenticeships enhance social mobility, especially for disadvantaged groups. However, barriers remain - from limited opportunities (35%) to a lack of information (32%). Nearly half of the young people feel they aren't well-informed about available apprenticeships in their field. They're important pathways not just to a job but to a sustainable career in industries like STEM, which young people increasingly favour.
