Tech progress stagnant since the 70s ? Peter Thiel on The Joe Rogan Experience sharing some mind-blowing theories and ideas. Thiel suggests that true technological progress has been stagnant since the 1970s. If technological advancement has narrowed to primarily digital realms while progress in other areas has nearly halted. Its also interesting to notice that wages -in real terms- have also stagnated since the 70s for everyone but the highest earners. The AI Illusion: Rethinking Our Approach to Machine Intelligence Many experts proclaim that we’re on the verge of creating artificial intelligence that will allow machines to take over everything. Others seem terrified by the possibility of humans becoming obsolete. The media and public discourse are filled with both utopian and dystopian visions of AI, often presenting it as an imminent revolution that will dramatically reshape society. The term ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI) should be abandoned. When true AI is created, it will have nothing artificial about it. And there’s no special reason why we should be able to recognize or understand it. Reality could be very different and unrecognizable. Our failure to understand other intelligent species like elephants, dolphins, or whales, despite decades of study, illustrates this point. Recent research has shown that simulating a single biological neuron requires an artificial neural network of at least 7 layers. The human brain has around 100 billion neurons, and it’s unclear how much of our intelligence resides solely in the brain versus other body cells, or even the surrounding universe. It will be many years before we can truly converse with a machine as equals or for machines to make conscious decisions, if ever. The real challenges we face are not from technology itself, but from the policies and social structures we create around it... AI in the Workplace: Boosting Productivity or Just Hype? Upwork Study Finds Employee Workloads Rising Despite Increased C-Suite Investment in Artificial Intelligence A new study from Upwork shows that people have very different ideas about AI. While 96% of executives think AI makes them more productive, 77% of workers think it has made their jobs harder and less efficient. It seems that 96% of C-suite executives said they think AI will make their company more productive, and 39% said their companies already require employees to use AI tools. On the other hand, 77% of workers say AI has made them less productive and given them more work to do. Additionally, 47% said they didn’t know how to boost their bosses’ productivity. ➡️ Apparently, overcoming issues of trust, governance and lack of AI education is becoming more critical by the day. ➡️ BUT the real story (hidden in these studies) is about focusing on specific business tasks and ignoring the noise of magical AI-for-all needs. The expectation of super-AI has actually killed the AI revolution. Many are still selling the idea of AI as some kind of hybrid between a conscious encyclopaedia and an electronic Leonardo da Vinci. These toxic ideas of AI taking care of almost everything and firing or killing everyone have burdened the AI industry for several years due to failed expectations.  There won't be AGI (artificial general intelligence) any time soon. Not with today's chip architecture. Consciousness is not computable; meaning is not an algorithmic process. Realise that most of the news you see around is deliberately made to support bubbles. The perpetual cycle of inflate + deflate to create money and transfer wealth to the top of the pyramid. AI is just another technology. It needs well-defined applications, boundary conditions, proper governance and training. The more defined the constraints and specifics of AI products, the better. No hype, no doom. Read about the specific, targeted areas where AI has the potential to make a real difference. There are quite a few. The opportunity for new applications and businesses lies, as always, at the frontier between technology and real life, not in a science fiction film.

AI: A productivity revolution or just marginal gains? AI is often touted as the next big productivity booster, with Workday predicting it could add £119 billion a year to the UK economy. The potential lies in saving significant time for managers and employees by handling repetitive tasks, which could boost engagement. However, overcoming issues of trust, governance and a lack of AI education are critical to realising this potential. For the West to see real productivity gains, we need innovations similar to those of the 19th and 20th centuries – railways, power lines, telephones, etc. These were real and profound changes, not just marginal improvements. Today’s advances in AI, such as content creation, customised pricing, customer support, quant trading, etc. offer marginal improvements that mostly benefit a few, but create the illusion of great advances in productivity. The same thing happened with the internet. Remember when it was supposed to usher in a new era of freedom, networked society and prosperity?. Technological progress is useless without a complete overhaul of outdated political and economic structures. Otherwise, it leads to stagnation and dictatorship because it becomes just another tool for maintaining the status quo.

Traceability of AI content and copywriting Would it be possible to reverse-engineer generative AI content to find out what original sources were used to create it?. In principle, no. Once you add entropy to the generative process, it becomes inherently irreversible. If there were any traceability between the results and the sources used, it would not be a true stochastic process. But you can use metadata to credit specific sources, and that's where things get interesting. A new discipline called "mechanistic interpretability" tries to understand in broad strokes what neutral networks do in order to reverse engineer the algorithms encoded in their parameters. In this animated video, researchers have been able to partially reverse-engineer how InceptionV1, a convolutional neural network, recognises images. https://lnkd.in/d7AjSDAj
