The ‘Green Gap’ - the gap between what people say they are going to do in relation to sustainability and what they actually do - is real and sizable. This gap offers opportunities for companies. Over 3/4 of consumers want brands to help them behave more sustainability and providing this help builds brand loyalty, helps meet sustainability goals and protects against greenwashing. Alex Jones and I believe that digital offers an opportunity for you to easily start providing this support to your customers today. Halo by Design
Business Consulting and Services
Supporting companies in meeting their sustainability goals through shifting employee and customer behaviour.
About us
People - consumer, employees, partners - and more importantly what they do or don’t do are going to be crucial in enabling sustainability strategy and, through this, meeting sustainability targets. These may be big changes – leasing not buying, sharing not owning - or small ones - deleting not saving, recycling not binning. But people will need support in making the shift and this is where ‘Halo by Design’ comes into play. We help understand what it will take to change people’s behaviour and then design experiences specifically to support them and, through this, help you meet your sustainability goals. Work with us when you are starting to think about how best to engage employees, partners or customers in your sustainability journey to help you meet your targets. Or when you have already started your journey but are not getting the results you want in terms of engagement and/or scale. We provide support from research through strategy setting to activation and beyond. We do this through identifying: • Where people are in their sustainability journey • Key groups to engage • Top behaviours to change • Barriers currently in place • Effective engagement mechanics to shift behaviors (and measurement strategies) • Ways to integrate into an existing engagement strategy or new engagement strategy • Methods to ensure the shift is long lasting We also provide support if behaviour change initiatives are not as effective as you would like them to be. • Why people are not changing their behaviours in the short or long term. • How to adapt the current experience / create a new experience to drive behaviour change at scale. Where relevant – typically early in a sustainability journey - we work very closely with Sustainability Consultancies to ensure that we are in lock step with both workstreams supporting each other in shaping and delivering the strategy. Contact info@halobydesign.com if you would like to have a conversation about how we can help.

Sharing learnings from the sustainability journey is vital which is why I love working with the brilliant Kevin Dunckley (He/Him) from HH Global and his team. HH Global have done such great work (and won so many awards) for the work they are doing with suppliers and clients to support them in their sustainability journey. Now they are turning their eye to their employees and engaging them deeply into their sustainability journey. Halo by Design is supporting through setting the employee activation strategy. So I was so excited to hear that Kevin talked about this work, and the approach Halo are taking, at #climateweek in NYC sharing my quote on stage. #Sharing our stories, and our learnings, from the sustainability transformation journey we are all on is so important to build momentum. It is great to work with clients who believe in this and share openly (warts and all) to support others on their journeys. #sharing #sustainabilitytransformation #employeeengagement

Project Director at The Sustainability Group & FuturePlus I Corporate Sustainability Solutions I SaaS I Consultancy I MSc Sustainable Development
A great article by the wonderful Tam Hussey highlighting an issue that resonates with much of the work we do at FuturePlus. Many in-house sustainability leaders we work with hold other full-time roles within their companies, meaning they have a mandate to deliver on sustainability goals but little time or resource available to achieve them. 🧐 The right support and solutions are vital for these ‘2hatters’. #sustainabilitysolutions #2hats

Love Unilever's #Hellmanns multi-year behavior change campaign focusing on reducing food waste. The campaign spans multiple years, markets, and channels under names like #realfoodmovement (Canada), #cookcleverwasteless (UK), and #maketastenotwaste (US), all under the mantra 'make taste not waste'. The initiative leverages digital effectively to support in shifting behaviour through platforms like websites offering 'flexipes', a YouTube channel with famous chefs creating meals from leftovers, and an app that helps you cook with what's left in your fridge. And the impact has been considerable with one Canadian initiative across 900 households cutting food waste by a staggering 33%. Would be great to see more of this type of focused ongoing behaviour change campaigning from brands. Does anyone have any examples they can share? Check out the campaign here: https://lnkd.in/eAJ3wThy #foodwaste #behaviourchange #greengap

Introducing #2Hats. Around half of the in-house sustainability leaders who I meet also hold another full-time role within their company – I call them 2Hatters. They have a unique set of challenges to overcome and Julia Carré-Sawaya (a 2Hatter) and I want to help. So we have set up a support community called #2Hats. Next session on the 26th September. To find out more about those challenges and how 2Hats can help check out my article in edie. And if you are a 2Hatter.....or a sustainability 1Hatter who wants to help.....you can join via the link to the private group in the notes. And/or repost this to let other 2Hatters know there is a group out there that can help with their specific challenges. #2hats #help #sustainabilitycommunity

Driving Sustainable Solutions with Hemp Fiber Innovation | Finance & Blockchain Enthusiast | Empowering Communities Through Equitable Resource Systems
I'm not typically active on LinkedIn, but this week in London has been an amazing treat that I'm honored to share with some incredible people. Today we spoke with Tam Hussey (Halo by Design) and Otti Vogt (Good Leadership Society) about culture and transformative change. Tam's inspirational approach to large scale, organization level cultural development, and her cutting-edge perspective on the costs of digital waste provided actionable steps for both top-down and bottom-up change. Otti came in with an excellent exercise that helped us reframe our perspectives as future business leaders with the unique opportunity to implement change on a societal level. Thank you John Davis, Kata Bahnsen-Reinhardt, Angela Davis, Briselda Molina, Ed.M Trish Dorman, University of Oregon, and the University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business for this opportunity to meet with the thought leaders of industry and sustainability. I would also like to take this chance to celebrate my fellow UO MBA students on the trip specializing in sustainability/innovation and their passionate commitment to being a part of the change we hope to see: Moriah Biederman, Corey Cullen, Kristiana Strtak, Lauren Welch, Bryan Mickelson, Jeremy Pledger, Jillian Weber.

Oh dear Nike. But you are not alone. Travel is one of the top causes of employee #greendissonance cited when I speak to employees to understand how best to engage them in a company's sustainability journey. #greendissonance is caused when there is a lack of consistency between what companies say externally and what they do internally - from the very visible (plastic cutlery in the canteen, unnecessary business class flights, excessive paper use) to the more hidden (procurement policies, pension portfolios, digital carbon footprint). It is a form of #greenwashing and very demotivating for employees. Which is why we try and get ahead of it with employee engagement campaigns in this space. Travel, specifically senior exec plane travel via business class or private jet is a frequently quoted and very saliant example of companies not walking the talk. In fact I spoke to someone from a sustainable brand who cited, as a reason for resigning, the fact the founders flew business class three times a month to the US. How do you combat it...monitor it closely, make the ESG teams aware of instances and help close the gap working tightly with ESG to support the behaviour change needed throughout the organisation to meet sustainability targets and visibly underline sustainability commitment. Top benefits: 1) Get in front of the negative tailwinds that often spin up in companies which will kill your engagement strategy before it has even started (we like to call it the ‘recycling isn’t actually recycled’ argument which means people don’t bother recycling at all). 2) Build an open, transparent and problem solving culture around these tricky areas. Nobody is perfect, no company is perfect. We are all in the middle of a huge transformation. The important thing is we are moving in the right direction. For more opportunities to engage and activate employees in your sustainability journey to meet your company’s sustainability targets see the link in the notes. Or drop me a message and we can have a chat. Thanks to Annamaria Melegh for flagging this story. #greendissonance #employeeengagement #greenhr #greengap

This stat reported in the FT gives me hope! ‘More than 40 per cent of Generation Z and millennials buy a second-hand product at least every few months against just above 20 per cent of baby boomers, according to a survey by analysts Euromonitor.’ And having just completed our 3rd car boot sale as a family I can confirm we spotted a lot of very trendy GenZs having a good trawl. There is so much that we can do to increase and expand this behaviour shift through creating the right digital and physical experiences to nudge behaviour in this direction. Thanks Anna Mullenneaux for sharing.
