In the final episode of HappyPorch Radio’s mini-series, our hosts Barry O'Kane and Emily Swaddle continue their deep dive into the rapidly evolving world of re-commerce within the fashion industry. As new platforms emerge and existing ones scale up, it's an exciting yet complex time for fashion, technology, and circularity to intersect. This episode features insights from industry leaders Gerrard Fisher, Kristina Bull, Joe Metcalfe, Andy Ruben, Wilson Griffin, J.R. Siegel, Cynthia Power, and Jessica Potter, who share their thoughts on the opportunities and challenges of this dynamic space. 💡 Key Takeaways: 🌟 Re-commerce is Rapidly Growing: It’s more than just peer-to-peer platforms like Vinted. From brand-owned resale programs to third-party managed solutions, re-commerce offers diverse business models to cater to a wide range of consumer needs. 🌟 A Transition Period for the Industry: The fashion industry, particularly re-commerce, is in a phase of significant growth and transformation. Many processes, like pricing and quality control, are still being optimised, but this transition is necessary for long-term success. 🌟 New Opportunities: Re-commerce is creating fresh job opportunities and business models. Joe Metcalfe shared a story of a family who left their corporate jobs to successfully run a re-commerce business on platforms like eBay. This growing space presents exciting opportunities for both individuals and organisations. 🌟 Tech as the Game-Changer: Technology is playing a pivotal role in optimising circular fashion. From enhancing photography and listing processes to improving logistics, technology is the backbone that enables re-commerce platforms. 🌟 Aligning Business Incentives is Essential: Wilson Griffin highlighted the importance of brands benefiting from resale, not just the first sale. For real change to happen, re-commerce needs to be a financially viable model for brands. 🌟 Circularity is Bigger than Resale: Re-commerce is only part of the solution. Other models like renting, repairing, and reducing overproduction and overconsumption are equally critical for building a truly circular fashion economy. 🎧 This conversation sheds light on the possible future of re-commerce and its role in creating a more sustainable fashion industry. While there’s progress, there's still much to be done—but with the right technologies, business models, and collective effort, re-commerce has the potential to significantly reduce fashion's environmental impact. 🔗 Don't miss out on this insightful episode! 💭 Bringing Your Vision to Life: Aligning Development and Execution In the fast-evolving tech landscape, especially within the circular economy, aligning your development team with your vision is essential for success. At HappyPorch, we've learned that effective partnerships—built on shared values, open communication, and trust—can turn challenges into opportunities. 💡 Here are our top 7 tips for fostering strong communication with your developers: 1️⃣ Shared Values: Work with teams that not only understand but embody your commitment to sustainability and ethics. 2️⃣ True Partnership: Involve your developers as strategic partners, not just vendors, to enhance collaboration. 3️⃣ User-Centric Focus: Keep the end user in mind—great code means little if it doesn’t deliver value. 4️⃣ Full Access: Maintain control over domains, hosting, and source code to ensure transparency and ownership. 5️⃣ Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, don’t hesitate to voice your concerns—early communication is key. 6️⃣ Address Issues Promptly: Tackle problems as they arise to prevent escalation and maintain project momentum. 7️⃣ Know When to Move On: If alignment is lacking, it might be time to find a team that shares your vision. By prioritising open dialogue and shared goals, we can transform potential roadblocks into stepping stones for success. 🚀 Start-ups must move fast, especially when driving innovation that demands system change. The key to success? Focusing on learning and validation. A crucial part of that is creating functional prototypes which not only validate ideas but also act as powerful tools for stimulating dialogue, collecting invaluable data, and refining concepts. We recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Saskia Manson from re:new, a Sustainability Consultant specialising in the circular economy and material reuse strategies in construction. Drawing from her rich experience as a Structural Engineer, Saskia has a vision for how re:new can drive more material reuse. Together, we transformed her vision into a working prototype—efficiently and without breaking the bank. Witnessing ideas rapidly transform into concrete solutions never fails to be a rewarding experience. 💬 As Saskia shared, ‘The team at Happy Porch were fantastic communicators and problem solvers, helping me to work out the simplest effective way to build re:new’s prototype. I enjoyed working with them immensely and look forward to continuing to do so in the future.’ We look forward to sharing more when it is launched to the public! #Innovation #CircularEconomy #Prototyping #StartUp #Collaboration #Sustainability

🌍 New ISO Standards for a Circular Economy: What does this mean for Circular Startups and SMEs? The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has recently released a new set of standards dedicated to the circular economy. These standards provide a comprehensive toolkit for businesses looking to adopt circular principles, making it easier than ever to transition to sustainable practices. Here’s a quick overview of the new ISO 59000 family standards: • ISO 59004:2024 - Vocabulary, principles, and guidance for implementing circular economy practices. • ISO 59010:2024 - Guidance on transitioning business models and value networks to align with circular economy principles. • ISO 59020:2024 - Methods for measuring and assessing circularity performance. Why Does This Matter for Startups and SMEs? These standards are a testament to the growing recognition of circularity as a critical pathway to achieving global sustainability goals. While ISO standards are often perceived as daunting, especially for SMEs and start-ups, they offer tremendous value in promoting circularity and fostering collaboration. Aligning with these standards can simplify your operations and open doors to new partnerships, driving a faster transition to a circular economy. For smaller organisations, embracing these standards is not just about compliance—it's an opportunity to lead in innovation and sustainability, ensuring your business is future-fit and helping enable a more circular world.
