Creating Great Places through inspiring, resource responsible Landscape Architecture, Masterplanning and Public Realm

About us

Our projects create unique places of fun, engagement and identity. They are embedded in the social and cultural history of the place. We are informed by context, natural processes and aspired use. Our pragmatic, thorough, and enthusiastic culture delivers enduring, sustainable and inspiring landscapes and we aim to be provocative, innovative and visionary. We aim to enhance civic vitality, reinforce local distinctiveness, and respond to the character of place. We offer a platform for communities to be heard, we are good listeners. We care. With increasing pressures on our environment, we believe in taking a responsible approach towards protecting our natural resources, conserving energy and promoting biodiversity. Our high-quality design, detailing and delivered projects seek to minimise long term life cycle costs and in their inherent quality reduce the burden of ongoing maintenance. Aftercare and longevity are at the forefront of project development, with sustainability at the heart of our principles.

Updates

  • HarrisonStevens Landscape Architecture & Urban Design team visits Lost Shore Surf Resort. Some images of our visit of the new inland surf facility at Ratho. We have been working on the project as lead master planners and landscape architects for 10 years. Many of our team have heard about the project through regular internal team meetings, for the whole team to see the progress and appreciate the scale of the project was awesome. More updates to follow no doubt as we approach the opening of the facility later this year. #lostshore #landscapearchitecture #masterplanning #wavegarden

  • HarrisonStevens are enhancing their nature based solutions portfolio with recent commissions at Fettes College. We have secured both the Landscape Management Plan and the Wellbeing Centre projects in recent months and are delighted at the progress of both. The Landscape Management Plan (LHMP) provides a review of the whole 100-acre campus to consider the positive environmental contribution it makes to the city. It will build on the school’s previous plan, a comprehensive document which has directed the management of the landscape over the last 25 years. Environmental and design practices have evolved, global considerations and priorities have changed. It is therefore important that now is the time to have a refresh and to rejuvenate the LHMP for the next generation of Fettesians. Our proposals will set out an holistic framework for the care and enhancement of the Fettes College landscape. The landscape provides a setting for the scholarly life, through sports, the curriculum, and the pastoral aspects of the school, which leads to an enhanced sense of wellbeing and healthy lives. It is important therefore to ensure the long-term sustainability of the landscape, the trees and woodlands, the pitches, the walks and drives, and the design landscape setting of the school buildings. The campus estate is beautiful and we have enjoyed many a site visit over the last few months, mature trees and woodlands structure the campus providing spaces in between for school life. These woodlands and rides of mature trees play host to various school activities such as outdoor lessons and pursuits, mountain bike trails, cross country runs and simply a place to relax and enjoy nature. The impact the landscape has on everyday aspects of the school life is not to be underestimated. In addition to the vision of the wider campus we are working within the consultant design team lead by Page\Park to deliver the new Wellbeing Centre on the east side of the campus. We provide landscape architect services which while ensuring the environs and setting of the new building is sensitive and appropriate to the character and scale of its context, it acknowledges that trees are of paramount concern. The existing trees in close proximity to the proposed new Wellbeing Centre are to be carefully managed and protected during the construction stage of the project. HarrisonStevens look forward to the delivery of the project, currently in stage 4, including the protection of the trees and the establishment of a new centre set within the existing mature landscape.’ #LandscapeManagementPlan #WellbeingCentre #FettesCollege #naturebasedsolutions #environmentaldesign #sustainability #campusdesign

  • From the very beginning, HarrisonStevens have been guided by a set of core values. Our early promotional material described our practice as: passionate, personable, pragmatic, thorough and adaptable. Committed to high quality delivery and innovative design, we aimed to be provocative and visionary. Our values define us. As the team has grown and our practice evolved, so too have we refined our values. to reflect on our values and how they shape the work that we do. In his book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’, Stephen R. Covey, outlines the concept of “Personality Ethics” and “Character Ethics” and the role they play in shaping communities and business culture, principles and values. Covey describes Personality Ethics as “Success defined through personality traits such as skills, attitudes and behaviours”. In contrast, Character Ethics go deeper: “These are the basic principles of effective living, they are part of you”. When Mike and Martin founded the practice, it was clear that while our personalities were very different (Personality Ethics), we shared a commonality in our characters and values (Character Ethics). It was our shared values that created the foundation of the practice that we know today as HarrisonStevens. We shared and discussed these values with the team, considering how our values could evolve as the team continued to grow. Together, we created a long list of values in response to the following prompts: • Why did we start the practice? • Why do we practice as landscape architects and urban designers? • What gets us out of bed in the morning? The team chose five principal values with which we would align our practice going forward: Integrity, Consistency, Excellence, Innovation and Legacy. We also identified Curiosity as our common Character Ethic. We hope they resonate with you as much as they do with us. HarrisonStevens have an unwavering conviction that our skills will benefit you and the community, at all stages of your project. HarrisonStevens can make a difference, and together, we will deliver a positive contribution.

  • On Friday 21st June HarrisonStevens hosted a Coffee Morning for residents of Gorgie/Dalry, Edinburgh. Those that previously expressed an interest in the proposed Community Garden/Production Garden were invited to share refreshments and cakes/biscuits while discussing the proposed Sauchiebank Community Garden. A Facebook group was started by one of the interested local residents, https://ow.ly/oLvB50SpRJ4 and relationships developed across a broad range of ages and backgrounds. Exciting times, and early in the life of the gardens, lets hope this group can develop and mature as does the space they create. As a group establishes, this will in turn lead to improved health and wellbeing among the local residents. We need to consciously embed gardens and gardening into daily life for everyone. In 2021, the RHS released research that revealed those who garden every day have wellbeing scores 6.6% higher and stress levels 4.2% lower than people who don’t garden at all. Surveying more than 6000 people the research showed a significant association between gardening more frequently and improvements in wellbeing, perceived stress and physical activity. Lets get gardening. #EdinburghCommunity #SauchiebankCommunityGarden #CommunityGardening #UrbanGardening #WellbeingThroughGardening

  • To mark ⭐ Volunteers' Week 2024 ⭐ (held 3rd-9th June) which celebrated the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK, we wanted to highlight the volunteering of one of our staff members. Our colleague Masha has been a regular volunteer with the The Water of Leith Conservation Trust since Autumn 2023. Focusing on different areas along the river, the volunteers engage in litter picking, gardening, river clean-up, path maintenance and many other important activities that are aimed to conserve and protect the river, walkway and surrounding environment along the Waters of Leith. No matter what the weather is like, the group meets on a regular basis during the week and weekend to ensure the Water of Leith riverscape is well maintained and continues to bring happiness to all people and nature residents! During one of the recent sessions, our colleague Harry joined Masha and the team of Volunteers at the area near Great Junction Street Bridge to tackle the clean-up after the days of heavy rainfall. 'It was a great opportunity to come together outside of work hours to make a positive contribution to our local environment!' - Masha #VolunteersWeek2024 #CommunityVolunteers #ConservationEfforts #RiverConservation #EnvironmentalVolunteers #UKVolunteering #NatureConservation #VolunteerImpact
