At 132 High Street, Marlborough, you'll find The Merchant's House, a rare Grade II* listed building from the Commonwealth period, built between 1653 and 1656. This remarkable example of a middle-class silk merchant’s home is celebrated for its nationally acclaimed wall paintings and exceptional decorative features. The Merchant’s House offers a fascinating glimpse into 17th-century life with its well-preserved rooms, including a grand panelled chamber with a limestone-carved fireplace and oak overmantle, a dining room from around 1670, and a suite of servants' quarters furnished according to a 1691 probate inventory. The building is particularly noted for its unique polychrome wall paintings, discovered in the 1990s, which feature fictive balustrades and a distinctive striped wall design. These features make The Merchant’s House an outstanding example of historical and artistic significance. Since 1991, The Merchant’s House Trust has dedicated itself to the conservation and restoration of this historic property, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern conservation techniques to preserve its historical charm. 📷: David Lovell #EverydayHeritage #HistoricBuildings #TheMerchantsHouse #GradeIIStarListed #17thCenturyArchitecture #Marlborough #Architecture #Design #Heritage

Nestled in the heart of Birmingham’s city centre are the Birmingham Back to Backs, a unique example of 19th-century working-class housing that has survived the test of time. These simple, brick-built houses were designed in a back-to-back formation around a communal courtyard, a common style for housing the city's growing industrial workforce during the 1800s. Now a Grade II listed site, the Back to Backs offer a glimpse into the everyday lives of the people who lived and worked here over the decades. This humble row of houses tells the story of Birmingham's industrial past and the resilience of the working-class communities who lived here. The Back to Backs stand as a reminder that even the most modest homes are part of our rich heritage. 📷: Brian Robert Marshall #EverydayHeritage #HistoricBuildings #Birmingham #GradeIIListing #WorkingClassHistory #BackToBacks #IndustrialHeritage #HumbleHeritage #Heritage #History

As HB&P marks its centenary this year, we have been revisiting articles from our annual journal. One such article is our 1982 feature on Crosby Moran Hall (then Crosby Hall). The article was the Anniversary Address delivered by Mr. W. Emil Godfrey at the Hall in 1976. To honour this connection, we're excited to include an exclusive visit to Crosby Moran Hall next month! Explore the legacy of this remarkable building, from its 15th-century origins to its connection with our Society's history. Tucked away in the heart of Spitalfields, East London, 19 Princelet Street is a hidden gem that tells a rich story of immigration, culture, and resilience. This early 18th-century Huguenot silk weaver's house, now a Grade II* listed building, reflects the waves of different communities that have called this area home over the centuries. Originally built in 1719, the house showcases classic Georgian architecture, with its elegant brickwork and large sash windows. However, it's not just the building's exterior that makes it significant. Over time, 19 Princelet Street has also housed a synagogue, and it now serves as a museum dedicated to immigration and diversity. 📷: Charles Watson, Historic England website #EverydayHeritage #HistoricBuildings #Spitalfields #GradeIIStarListing #GeorgianArchitecture #History #Heritage #PrinceletStreet #London #LondonHistory #Architecture

Teetotal Hall in Penryn, a true gem of Victorian architecture. Built in 1852, this Grade II listed building stands as a testament to the significance of community spaces. Teetotal Hall’s façade is adorned with a distinctive frieze bearing its name, proudly declaring its role in the local community. Constructed from roughly-coursed granite with rock-faced plinth and quoins, this two-storey structure features a striking triangular pediment and round-arched openings with charming fanlight-headed windows. The elegant design reflects both its era and its purpose, showcasing the craftsmanship of the time. The hall's symmetrical three-bay front and prominent pediment make it a standout feature of Penryn’s streetscape. While the interior remains uninspected, the exterior alone speaks volumes about its historical significance and architectural style. Teetotal Hall is a prime example of how everyday buildings contribute to our understanding of the past, from local customs to architectural trends. By celebrating structures like this, we ensure that their stories and significance endure for future generations to appreciate. #TeetotalHall #Penryn #Cornwall #Heritage #VictorianArchitecture #HistoricBuildings #Conservation #HeritageMatters #CommunitySpaces #HBAP
