It’s about time there was increasing focus on the provenance of ingredients in meals served in schools and other public sector settings. It shouldn’t be about ‘placating farmers’ - I’m not going to get involved in that - it should be about driving nutritional and quality standards by funding services correctly and ensuring there is consistency and compliance to the standards set. At HCL we are proud to only use British Red Tractor meats, British Lyon Quality eggs and as much fresh produce from our local suppliers Histon Produce as possible. So we are already doing what The Labour Party government is looking at. The schools we serve in Hertfordshire and our neighbouring counties benefit from the high quality and local sourcing of our meal service. The government do fund feeding in English schools at infants level, but at only £2.58 per two-course meal, when the true cost is now closer to £3.50. It’s not just the ingredients, there have been significant increases in the labour cost in producing a meal. In the past ten years, labour costs have increased over 90%, with ingredient cost going up by 32%, however the government funding for infant meals has increased only 12.17%. We still (just about) make this meal service work, with the best quality meals we can produce, and genuinely being profit-conscious so we keep our pricing as low as possible. But if the government wants us to promote British farming through how we source our ingredients, they need to more closely reflect the costs of that through the funding we receive. We believe there would be far greater benefits to children’s nutrition and ‘the pounds in parents pockets’ in funding school lunches correctly rather than looking to fund breakfast clubs which many schools are struggling to see the benefits of as they already have this provision in place.
