Paul swapped his career in the RAF and followed in his daughter's footsteps into a career in diagnostic radiography. "Seeing my daughter embark on her career in radiography reignited the spark of an idea I had about the profession back in the early 1990s. It wasn’t the right time then, but it is now!" Being part of the team is one of the best things about his job. "Resourcefulness and adaptability was part and parcel of my job in the RAF and its essential to get good diagnostic quality images of patients. The camaraderie within a good department is also similar, and my Forces sense of humour fits in very well with this job too!" He also has a reminder of the importance of work experience for anyone thinking about radiography as a career. "You can arrange for some work experience in the areas you’re considering to help you decide. Work experience is not just for school children and it may also be a prerequisite to starting your university course." Is he pleased that he made the switch? You bet he is! "Making the move into diagnostic radiography and imaging is easily the best one I’ve made since signing up for the RAF all those years ago." Meet Sarah, a sustainability champion at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is making waves in the NHS! She's on a mission to make the NHS greener that has a positive impact on patients. With a diverse background that includes roles at Defra and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, Sarah swapped careers to the NHS after discovering a perfect opportunity. The pandemic brought challenges, especially in her efforts to engage young people about environmental issues. She launched a community interest company focused on getting into schools to talk about green issues, but when schools shut down, she found a new career at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, leading her to her current NHS role. Now, Sarah is dedicated to managing the Trust’s energy usage, promoting usage reductions and implementing greener practices in areas such as travel, transport and water. Although she’s still new to the NHS, she’s already pursuing projects like improving cycling facilities and acquiring electric bikes for community nursing teams, along with installing more EV chargers. Her work not only supports sustainability but also enhances mental health and wellbeing for patients. "It’s incredibly rewarding to contribute to an organisation that prioritises sustainability and drives meaningful change for patients." #GreenCareersWeek #GCW2024

A massive thank you to the amazing NHS learning disability nurses on #LDNurseDay! Lilian is a newly qualified learning disability nurse at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. She told us why she is passionate about being an advocate for people with learning disabilities. "My sister's learning disability inspired me to want to help others with similar needs. I believe everyone deserves to have the same level of healthcare regardless of who they are and it's my mission is to make this happen. "I want to be someone who makes a positive impact on people's lives. As a learning disability nurse, I am blessed to have this opportunity." Lilian's sister passed before she could see her hard work and the difference she's making to people with learning disabilities. We think she would be really proud. If Lilian's story has inspired you, applications to learning disability nursing course are open on the UCAS website. You could also receive at least £6,000 a year to help with your studies. https://lnkd.in/e-CW4BVH #ChooseLDNursing #InspireLDNursing #LDNurseDay

Every year, 10,000 young people leave care in England. James was once one of those people. Now, he works for Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, following support from the NHS Universal Family Leavers Programme which launched in 2023. The programme aims to widen access to NHS employment for young people who have been in care. ‘One thing I wanted to do was become an ambassador as a care leaver because I was one of the first through the system to be employed by the NHS. I want to help raise awareness of this programme so others in similar situations can take up these opportunities too. Every young person should feel empowered to live out their full potential and lead a successful career, regardless of their circumstances.’ Search ‘NHS Universal Family Leavers Programme’ to find out more information.

"I knew I wanted to do something in healthcare so I set about doing work experience in physiotherapy, dentistry and orthopaedics." Alex's work experience led to a podiatry career. But we know it's not always easy to find placements. Here are some tips for young people on securing a placement. 1. Research NHS careers. You don't have to have chosen but NHS trusts will like it if you understand what roles are on offer. 2. Look beyond hospitals. There are GP and dental surgeries, pharmacies as well as community services and care homes. 3. Create a CV. You might not need it but it looks professional to have one. We have lots of more tips on getting work experience with our Smart Guide. https://lnkd.in/eY-eqxyr
