What is centrifuging anyway? Allow me, Kate Knowler, the queen of all things blood for nutritional therapists, to explain 👑 When blood is drawn from the vein, it is inverted several times to mix the blood with the coagulant/anti-coagulant additive in the vacutainer tube, and then sent to the lab. Or... It is inverted, settled for 15 minutes, and then spun in a centrifuge for 15 minutes at 3000rpm, before being processed by hand and then sent off to the lab. The centrifuging separates the red blood cells from the proteins, hormones etc found within them, allowing the lab to analyse the sample and provide us the data we need as NT's. Side note - even the samples not centrifuged before posting will get centrifuged, it's just that the lab staff do the centrifuging process instead. Second side note - no, you cannot centrifuge a sample manually by holding the sample in your hand and spinning "really fast" (yep - this was a genuine suggestion given to one of my clients - not by me!) I'm running a centrifuge workshop on Friday 6th September. If you're a phlebotomist who needs to learn centrifuging, my workshop might be just what you need!
