Really excited to share the results of a sustainable hackathon collaboration with Microsoft’s MAIDAP (Microsoft AI Development Acceleration Programme) team. The Challenge Could the MAIDAP team beat Microsoft Azure’s average carbon intensity in the UK simply by shifting workloads in space and time across the heata network? Read the blog to find out the answer! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXTqiPgm — Big thanks to Aarti Dwivedi, Chester Curme, Derenik Haghverdian, Ph.D., Juhi Paralkar, Natalie Isak, Nick Glaze, Omisa J., and Soundararajan Srinivasan, we were hugely impressed by the capabilities of the team and their enthusiasm for heata’s mission and vision. Thanks also to Jen Fox for facilitating. Chris Jordan, Michael Paisley, Charlie Beharrell. #Heata #GreenCloud #AIforSustainability #FinOps #GreenOps #DistributedComputing
About us
Data Centres already emit more carbon than the entire aviation industry, and with AI fuelling a new boom in data centre construction, they will consume almost 10% of global electricity by 2030. heata believes this to be incompatible with a Net Zero future. Backed by British Gas, heata has reimagined the data centre as a network of distributed servers inside people’s homes, where they capture the waste heat from data processing and use it to provide people who need it with free hot water. heata reduces energy use by 80% and helps people in fuel poverty at the same time. With a network of heata units installed in homes throughout the UK, companies are already joining the heata network to reduce the carbon footprint of their IT whilst giving back to their communities.

🤯 Data centre emissions could be 662% higher than big tech claims. ⚡The International Energy Agency stated that data centres already accounted for 1% to 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2022 – remember, that was before the #AI boom really kicked off with ChatGPT’s launch at the end of that year. Source: https://lnkd.in/dQuYgvRM ⬆️ The global reliance on #cloud #compute and #data #centres is only going in one direction, and that means more energy. Computers working hard get hot, and at the scale of big data centres this heat needs industrial level cooling solutions, which means (you guessed it) even more energy and water. 👋 Our decentralised network enables smarter use of energy. It takes the heat generated from hot computer chips and turns it into free hot water for UK homes. 🧠 If we think differently about how we build data centre infrastructure, some of its biggest challenges can become opportunities. ✌️ Let’s use energy twice, and use the compute boom to provide heat in society. Now that is a cool idea. Learn more https://hubs.la/Q02Yl2W60

A couple of weeks ago heata supplied 1% of the computing for a live experiment at CERN! 👉 https://hubs.la/Q02YlyQ30 The potential here is huge. In addition to influencing where these workloads are placed today, governments could choose to support the construction of heat reuse compute infrastructure to meet the processing needs of tomorrow. Imagine CERN experiments providing free hot water for homes across the UK for years to come... It’s possible, we could be giving this heat to people, rather than wasting it. At heata we are committed to a smarter energy future, where the waste heat from compute supports the need for heat in society. Learn about heata today: https://hubs.la/Q02YlyP80

Nice to work together on this Karen Gazzard The Ruby Cube Ltd! Your render provided free hot water to UK homes and so the pleasure is all ours!
Our largest restoration and rewilding project yet! Introducing the 440-acre Bog Hall Habitat Bank, a vast project created in collaboration with the Castle Howard Estate Ltd in North Yorkshire. This 3D visualisation shows what we expect to see over the next 30 years. Our goal is to transform the low-yielding, wet and difficult-to-farm space into a biodiverse mosaic of wetlands, ponds and scrubland where wildlife can thrive. Our specialist ecologists have chosen local plant species to benefit the area and encourage the return of rare native birds including the nearly lost entirely, turtle doves. With a strategic management plan in place, we will introduce sustainable grazing livestock and rewild iconic landscape-shaping species such as beavers, working closely with the Beaver Trust. In total, this project is forecast to almost triple biodiversity in this space. We’re using robust scientific methodologies and advanced data gathering technologies to demonstrate tangible gains for nature. With funding secured in advance for the project's full lifetime, we're now inviting nature-positive businesses to purchase Nature Shares in this project – offering them a share in the significant biodiversity this project is generating. The Bog Hall Habitat Bank is part of England’s fastest growing network of nature recovery projects where Environment Bank has directly channelled private investment into more than 2,500 acres of restoration in just a few short years. Thank you to Abbi, Georgie, Guy, Jasper, Nick, and all the team at Castle Howard for collaborating with us! 🧠 Buying carbon credits is buying into the problem. #Carbon offsetting is big business, but not so big impact, and it’s giving companies an easy out - ‘We’ve checked the carbon offset box. Job done.’ But it’s also enabling them to check out of thinking critically about the impact of their choices. Here are some key points from a 2023 report in Science Journal: “[we] compared the actual effects of […] projects with measurable baseline values and found that most of them have not reduced deforestation significantly, and those that did had benefits substantially lower than claimed.” "These projects have already been used to offset almost three times more carbon than they have actually mitigated through forest preservation..." "If you exaggerate or get it wrong, intentionally or not, you are selling hot air" - Prof Andreas Kontoleon 💡 Let’s invest in a reduction at source, not an after the event offset. With all the #investment in #infrastructure to support the explosion of #AI (power consumption projected to more than double by 2030), now is the time to be thinking more smartly about how we can build compute infrastructure to significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon impact. If we reuse the waste heat we can offset a heating energy cost elsewhere, and avoid a cooling energy cost on the compute side. And by using existing buildings, we can avoid the embodied carbon in building a new data centre, and its broader impacts on power and water. Let’s build more energy efficient infrastructure now, rather than investing in offsets that kick the problem into the long, yellowing grass. 😎 At heata we are doing just that, we reuse our waste heat to support households with free hot water, offsetting a domestic hot water energy cost (an actual bonafide offset we might add). Imagine the UK as a distributed data centre, with the waste heat being used to support the need for heat in society. Wouldn't that be great. 👋 Join the heata revolution today. Don’t just claim to be green. Be green. ✔️ Reduce the carbon impact of your cloud compute & support families with their bills. (ps. You can always offset the remainder, if that makes you feel better.) 📣 heata and Expanso have teamed up to expand green cloud to traditional workloads! 🤝 We're thrilled to announce a new partnership that will enable the high scale open source software #Bacalhau to allow #Docker and #WASM workloads to run in a distributed way across the heata network to cut carbon and help people in fuel poverty. Once set-up workloads can be deployed directly from the Bacalhau CLI. ⚡ Through this partnership, heata and Expanso are providing organisations with an easier and more cost effective way to improve the efficiency of their compute, whilst also increasing reliability and reducing job runtime. Together, these innovations enable a cloud infrastructure with superior energy efficiency and carbon accountability, as well as lowering heating costs for households across the UK. 💬 Here is some of what heata Co-Founder and CTO Chris Jordan and Expanso CEO David Aronchick had to say about this exciting new partnership.
