About us

Heatherwick Studio is a team of 200 problem solvers dedicated to making the physical world around us better for everyone. Based out of our combined workshop and design studio in Central London, we create buildings, spaces, master-plans, objects and infrastructure. Focusing on large scale projects in cities all over the world, we prioritise those with the greatest positive social impact. Working as practical inventors with no signature style, our motivation is to design soulful and interesting places which embrace and celebrate the complexities of the real world. The approach driving everything is to lead from human experience rather than any fixed design dogma. The studio’s founder Thomas Heatherwick comes from a background immersed in materials and making. His curiosity and passion for problem-solving matured into the studio’s current design process where every architect, designer, landscape architect and maker is encouraged to challenge and contribute ideas. Positive and pragmatic, the studio’s team are collaborators whose role is to listen, question, then lead the conception and construction of special and unusual places. Ingenuity and inspiration are used to make projects that are affordable and buildable. And our client is vital, who comes on the journey and challenges our thinking; together we look for the opportunities that might traditionally be overlooked. Our best future projects are the ones that will teach us the most.

A pragmatic, punchy, imaginative national programme - great work from Heatherwick studio. How many times in adult, working life do we hear colleagues and partners say “I’m not creative”? But maybe they were “not bad at art/English at school”. Helping young people to see themselves as creative could change our world - see blog by Matt Bell and link to a toolkit ready to use. #InTheMaking

This week sees the public launch of In The Making. It's a national programme designed to help young people see themselves as creative. Creative education has a huge impact on academic performance, school attendance, and mental health. And yet we've lost 15,000 teachers of creative subjects from English schools in the last 13 years. The Government's talking about fixing the foundations. Well this is one of those foundations! I've tried to explain why it matters and how we can all be part of the fight back in this blog. There's also a new film, a practice guide, and an evidence review on the Heatherwick website. Enjoy & share. So many of the best things we do now began with a moment when we first thought... maybe I'm a bit creative. https://lnkd.in/eFNr4yCU

Can a serious piece of research be turned into a video game? That was the question we asked ourselves in 2023 when exploring ways to make social impact studies as accessible as possible. We have put the idea to the test with a new Fortnite game. It takes insights collected in a recent independent report into Little Island and brings them to life in a virtual version of the project. The studio’s communications and immersive media teams worked with 3D visualisation platform SpaceForm Technologies to develop the game. In it, players parachute onto the island and explore in Open World mode, discovering facts about the park as they explore. They can then enter through a portal into game mode, where they race against the clock to find as many hidden objects as possible, using the knowledge they have picked up to answer questions about Little Island to save time. We tested the game with the public last month at Open House and are hoping to release it more widely soon. In the video above, our Head of Content and Engagement, Kim Megson, explains more. We hope the game will be a playful and fun way to highlight the important topic of what we all need from our public spaces and parks. __ You can read the full Little Island Social Impact Study on our website (https://ow.ly/yLZg50TJySo). We asked AEA Consulting to measure whether we achieved our objectives to make a place that is welcoming to all, and that offers free access to culture and green space. As part of this process, they asked visitors, artists and staff about what they think about the park.

Thomas Heatherwick is an explorer, an adventurer, a rule breaker, a game changer, a risk taker. He makes ideas happen. Since 1994, his design studio has cultivated a unique practice with a spirit of discovery and invention at its heart. You may recognise some of their most iconic creations: a reimagining of London’s red double-decker bus, the Olympic Cauldron that carried the flame at the 2012 London Olympics, and the UK Pavilion which transformed the skyline at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Our support enabled Heatherwick Studio to showcase 'Inside Heatherwick Studio', a major exhibition that toured East Asia in 2015. This #WorldArchitectureDay, let's look back at some of Heatherwick's most iconic designs. 📸 The UK Pavilion; photo by Hufton+Crow 📸 The New Bus for London; photo by Iwan Baan 📸 The Olympic Cauldron; photo by Jasper White 📸 The UK Pavilion; two photos by Iwan Baan #BritishCouncil90

Last Saturday we invited the public into our King’s Cross studio, Making House. A special display of models, objects, films, furniture (and a bonus video game!) was curated for this year’s Open House Festival, filling the space and helping us tell the story of 30 years of our projects. In just six hours, almost 1,600 people visited Making House, explored our workshop and stopped by at our Materials Table. Our sincere thanks to everyone who took time out of their weekend to pop along. We were delighted (and taken aback) by the amazing turnout and are grateful for everyone’s kindness, curiosity and excellent questions. The goal of Open House is to inspire people about architecture and design, and we hope we played our part this year. Here is just a small selection of some of favourite photos taken on the day. Deputy Project Leader at Heatherwick Studio - CTBUH UK Committee Member

I'm excited to announce that I'll be presenting at the upcoming Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2024 International Conference, New or Renew: Addressing the Density Dilemma, in London. My presentation will showcase Heatherwick studio’s approach to reimagining and repurposing existing structures.   Each year in America, approximately 1 billion square feet of buildings are demolished and replaced – the equivalent of half of Washington, D.C. being torn down annually. In the UK, we demolish 50,000 buildings every year, generating 126 million tonnes of waste.   By reusing buildings, we can reduce waste, cut carbon emissions, and create vibrant, human-centered spaces. From restoring Cape Town's historic grain silos at Zeitz MOCAA to reimagining Coal Drops Yard in London, these projects highlight how preserving heritage can lead to more sustainable and engaging urban environments. Reinventing old structures isn't just sustainable—it’s an opportunity to create soulful spaces rich in history and culture.   Feel free to drop me a line if you're also attending and would like to connect!   #Sustainability #UrbanDesign #HeatherwickStudio Image 1: View of Zeitz MOCAA in Silo Square (Credit: Iwan Baan) Image 2: Coal Drops Yard (Credit: Raquel Diniz)

On Saturday 14th September, we are opening our London studio to the public as part of this year’s Open House Festival. 2024 is our 30th anniversary year, and our first in Making House, our new King’s Cross home. To mark these two milestones, we want to welcome anybody in who has an interest in architecture, design, making, materials, or is curious about our creative process. Studio members will be on hand to answer questions and chat about what we do, and guests can explore a specially curated display of models and objects that tell the story of Heatherwick studio’s 30 years in 30 projects. They can also experience our workshop, see some of our 3D printers in action, watch some of our favourite studio films, and even have a go at a special video game that digitally transports you to our Little Island project in New York. The goal of Open House is to inspire people about architecture, and we hope we can play our part by inviting in as many people as possible on the day. No tickets are required (you can just turn up) but there may be some waiting time to get in. We’ll be open from 10am to 4pm. Find out more via the link below: https://lnkd.in/g8dkhNDa
