  • 🚽 The Mayor of London has announced a £15 million investment to open more public toilets across Transport for London, as outlined today in an Evening Standard article that features quotes from our own Gail Ramster, who runs the Public Toilet Research Unit. “Public toilets are critical infrastructure for us to access and enjoy our city, and yet they are so rarely invested in or even discussed, so it is commendable to see this commitment from TfL," says Gail.     Intelligent Mobility Design Centre at Royal College of Art

    📣 We are delighted to announce that Streets for Diversity, a collaborative research project led by Dr Katie Gaudion, The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, and Dan Phillips, Intelligent Mobility Design Centre, won in the Design Research for Healthy Cities Category at the Healthy City Design Awards.     💡 The winning projects of the 2024 Helen Hamlyn Design Awards from the The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the RCA propose visionary and inclusive solutions to issues in sustainability, disability and healthcare. The winning projects are: 📱 'Pera' from Alexander Spencer, Hanju Seo, Maria Asif and Sven Winkler Von Stiernhielm (all MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering) were awarded The Helen Hamlyn Award for Creativity. ‘Pera’ is a smart health assistance for people with bowel incontinence consisting of a wearable device that monitors bowel activity and provides people with predictive insights through Pera’s paired app. 🎣 'Ziwa Vision' from Sven Winkler Von Stiernhielm (MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering) was awarded The Northumbrian Water Award for Inclusive Innovation. ‘Ziwa Vision’ is a device aiding thriving and environmentally responsible food production in developing countries. 👔 'Branches' from Yiming Pang (MA Fashion) and Jialu Hou (MA Design Products) was awarded The Snowdon Award for Disability for ‘Branches’, a multifunctional caring hanger designed for one-armed individuals to enhance their independence in daily tasks such as dressing and grooming.   • 📣 🎉 We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2024 Helen Hamlyn Design Awards! The annual Helen Hamlyn Design Awards recognise creativity in people-centred, inclusive design across all disciplines of the College and celebrate the most visionary, inclusive and innovative Royal College of Art graduate projects. In 2024, three awards were granted, the Helen Hamlyn Award for Creativity, The NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) Award for Inclusive Innovation and The Snowdon Award for Disability. Each winning project is awarded £2000. The winners were: 🚽 Pera - Alexander Spencer, Hanju Seo, Maria Asif, Sven Winkler Von Stiernhielm (all MA Innovation Design Engineering) Pera is a smart health assistant for people with bowel incontinence. The wearable device offers real-time continuous monitoring of bowel activity and provides users with predictive insights through Pera’s paired app. Pera aims to erode the taboo associated with bowel incontinence and give people their freedom back, and advance preventative technology in gastrointestinal healthcare.   🐟 Ziwa Vision - Sven Winkler Von Stiernhielm (MA Innovation Design Engineering) Ziwa Vision introduces a way to feed farmed fish more sustainably by improving the evaluation of fish behaviour via real-time machine learning analysis and alert staff to stop providing feed at the optimal time. The physical device, which comprises a solar powered camera, speaker and processing unit, is attached to enclosure frames widely used by Tilapia farmers globally. The device alerts staff to stop with a speaker sound. Ziwa Vision can contribute to thriving and environmentally responsible food production in developing countries. 👕👖 Branches- Yiming Pan (MA Fashion) and Jialu Hou⁠ (MA Design Products) Branches is a multifunctional caring hanger designed for one-armed individuals to enhance their independence in daily tasks such as dressing and grooming. Inspired by the natural form of tree branches, it integrates practical features including quick shoelace tying, convenient cuff buttoning, one-hand tie tying, and dressing/undressing aids. Made from lightweight and durable eco-friendly materials, Branches is both aesthetically pleasing and ergonomically sound.     💡 Does the role of the #Designer need to be redefined to reflect the challenges of our time? Rama Gheerawo (Director of The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the RCA) joined a panel event at London Design Festival last Saturday to answer this question with a focus on responsible #Design. He was joined by liang-jung chen (Industrial Designer and Artist); Danah Abdulla, (Reader in Anti/Post/Decolonial Histories Theories Practices and Praxes, Decolonising the Arts Institute, University of the Arts London).   • 📣 We are excited to announce that our research project, 3D Modelling for Wellbeing, that explores how AI can help develop solutions for back pain, developed as part of the AiDLab programme, will be on display as part of the London Design Festival exhibition RCA Research and Innovation. The exhibition brings together new research and innovation projects from across the RCA that focus on materials developments, climate action and the integration of artificial intelligence with design to drive innovation and sustainability. Included in the exhibition: Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLab) - the first research platform that focuses on the integration of Artificial Intelligence AI with design. It was jointly established by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the RCA, and is funded by the HKSAR Government under the InnoHK Research Clusters. Ecological Citizen(s) Network+ - a 4 year programme based at the RCA in collaboration with University of York’s Stockholm Environment Institute and Wrexham University, with a mission to catalyse Ecological Citizenship for positive climate action. The Network is made up of a transdisciplinary team working across design, citizen-science, activism, technology and engineering. Textiles Circularity Centre - UKRI funded programme that aims to enable the transition to a circular textiles economy through an interdisciplinary approach to research. It combines research into circular supply chains, biomaterials innovation and consumer experience to envision a circular future for the fashion-textiles industry.
