We’re Hft, a charity on a mission to create a future where learning disabled people can live the best life possible

About us

We are a national charity, founded in 1962. We pioneered the idea that adults with learning disabilities have the right to choices about how they live and how they are supported, to enable them to lead the best life possible. We continue to explore ways to deliver this right for people, every day. People with learning disabilities face obstacles that are hard to imagine. We use our skills, experience and creative ideas to help people to overcome them. Our Fusion Model of Support is key in this – it’s how we ensure the best possible outcomes for everyone we support, challenging us to provide consistent, high-quality services. We support people in all areas of their life: developing practical skills, connecting them to their community, helping them to get a job and introducing them to technology that can help them to live as independently as possible. Local authority social care budgets have historically funded our services. But ongoing cuts have placed mounting pressure on local authorities and providers. Today, it’s common to find that local authority budgets will cover only the basics, or funding for only those with the most complex needs. We don’t feel that is enough. So we also raise money for things that are no longer funded to make sure people can live the best life possible.

💬 Watching Paul's excitement and supporting his journey has been a true joy for all of us. 🎭 Paul, a person we support in Hft Leeds, was bit by the acting bug back in 2018 and wanted to get involved in local theatre. He was supported to get involved with ‘We Are Theatre’, a local company in Yorkshire who believe in using theatre as a vehicle to enhance people’s lives. 🐎 He recently took part in two productions of 'Hi-De-Hi', playing the role of riding instructor and former jocket Fred. In one performance, Paul was the only member of the cast with a learning disability. And we've been reliably informed that he executed the role of Fred brilliantly both times! Amazing work, Paul! We can't wait for your West End debut 😉 #SocialCare #LearningDisability #Theatre #Acting

💬 "One of our most successful events in recent times. Thanks to the Nailsea community for making it possible" 🙌 Our Community Fundraising Officer Hannah was recently at Nailsea Farmers Market, raising money to help learning disabled adults live the best lives possible. 💜 Thanks to the generosity of those who stopped by, Hannah was able to raise £235.95 on the day! #Fundraising #LearningDisability #SocialCare #SupportWork

🗣️ “Our partnership with Storyhouse and the Kaleidoscope Festival has been really special.” 🤝 Our friendship and relationship service, Luv2meetU, were invited to this year’s Kaleidoscope Festival. This is a weeklong celebration of neurodiversity, inclusion and the talents of disabled people. 🎨 Luv2meetU came together to create a display of artwork that best reflected the types of challenges typically faced by learning disabled people. The piece was titled ‘The Running Track’ and it served as a platform for the discussion of difficult challenges. It was also some seriously cool art! #SocialCare #LearningDisability #KaleidoscopeFestival

💼 “Charlie will always ask me if I need help with anything and each time he attends the training, he will ask me when the next one is booked.” 🧑🤝🧑 Charlie, a person we support, loves taking part in any of the training sessions happening in his service. Recently, he took part in a manual handling training session alongside Hft colleagues. 🍩 Charlie loved being involved in the session, especially since it meant he could enjoy a free doughnut once the training was finished! #LearningDisability #SocialCare

👑 “I wanted another little girl to have princess hair too.” 💇♀️ Maddie, a person we support, is going above and beyond to support children with cancer in her community. She’s donating her hair to help make a wig. 💸 As well as donating her hair, Maddie is raising funds for local cancer charity ‘Matt’s Mission’. She’s currently smashing her original fundraising target of £500, with a whopping £1,570 raised so far! 👏 We’re all so incredibly proud of you, Maddie! What an incredibly kind and wonderful gesture. #SocialCare #LearningDisability

🌳 A group of people we support have been getting involved with their local community orchard in Madeley. They’ve been visiting the site weekly to tend to three raised beds and participate with other community groups. 🏆 Recently, their hard work tending to the gardens has been recognised. The orchard was named a finalist for the BBC Make a Difference Awards! 👏 We're sure you'll join us in congratulating our avid gardeners who've helped to put this community orchard on the map! #SocialCare #LearningDisability #Gardening #Community

Our CEO Steve Veevers joined BBC journalist and disability podcaster, Emma Tracey, to discuss why it is so hard to transition from education to work for young learning disabled people. Listen to Steve's interview on the BBC Podcast 'Access All: Disability News and Mental Health'. Steve did a great job of being an ally for learning disabled people, speaking up about the challenges they face and the support we need within the sector. Well done Steve! 👏 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/dBZBU9je
