📑📑 Cycling UK has released two new reports on rural mobility, confirming that walking, cycling, and wheeling are not just urban transport modes, but essential parts of life in rural communities too.
Working with PHIL JONES ASSOCIATES LIMITED and on behalf of South Hams District Council & West Devon Borough Council, we’ve gathered insights from over 1,500 local responses showing that active travel is already making a difference.
🚶♂️ 78% of residents already walk or wheel for their local journeys
🚲 84% agree cycling is good for health
🚶♀️ 45% of those not currently cycling would consider it for local trips
Our findings demonstrate how active travel helps create happier, healthier, and greener communities by reducing social isolation, tackling congestion, improving health, and helping local authorities meet climate change commitments.
The research highlights the demand for safe infrastructure, slower traffic speeds and the opportunity for community support through behaviour change interventions, which can be implemented before or alongside infrastructure changes that work for rural areas.
Cycling UK’s strategy offers tailored approaches to rural communities of different sizes and starting points. It provides a framework for other areas to consider when planning their own active travel interventions.
Evidence from the research shows that active travel in rural areas isn’t just viable—it’s a normal way of life that more people are eager to embrace.
Cycling UK has extensive experience delivering accurate, timely, and insightful research, consultancy, and collaborative projects. We specialise in reaching underrepresented groups and offer expert advice on monitoring and evaluation in active travel. 💼 As rural local authorities continue to advocate for the funding and support they need, this report provides vital evidence of the demand for active travel in rural areas. By highlighting the successes and needs of your communities, we are helping demonstrate the case for further investment.
