Hiraeth Architects: Embracing the past, creating the future.

About us

We are Hiraeth. An architectural practice with a sense of belonging. An architectural practice that creates inspiring places. Places that combine a deep understanding of the site with innovation, craft, and low carbon, low impact design. Our portfolio of work traverses all sectors but with two particular specialisms: 1. Innovative, low carbon design using timber and natural based materials for high performance, whole building systems with modern methods of construction. 2. The conservation, alteration and evolution of sites and buildings of sensitive and specialist interest due to their architectural, social, physical or historical nature. Hiraeth is a Welsh word that means a deep longing for a place that no longer exists or never was. For home and a sense of belonging. This is the spirit that drives us. People who love Hiraeth do so not just for our beautiful, bespoke, climate and socially aware designs, but for our attitude and that we stand for more. Better design, better supply chains, and better solutions. This longing for better is at our core. So say Hi to Hiraeth and join our journey...

We are really pleased to see the project for Neath’s Gnoll Park reach an important milestone as work starts on site with Andrew Scott Ltd appointed as principal contractor. Funded by UK Government, it has taken a massive effort from all parties to see this project to this stage. We are really proud to be a key part of it and can’t wait for the new visitor centre to take shape, the former Gnoll House ruins sensitively conserved, and Pond Cottage brought to life again as holiday accommodation.    Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council / Andrew Scott Ltd / Jubb / Davies Landscape Architects / Asbri Planning / McCann and Partners Ltd

The afternoon breakout sessions have proven extremely popular. Rob Thomas from Hiraeth Architecture opened up Timber 101 with Dan Ridley-Ellis from Edinburgh Napier University exploding some myths about home grown timber, and Phil O'Leary from Filros Timber Consultancy shining a light on what we mean by quality. There were lessons on visual grading from Phil and Dr Morwenna Spear from the BioComposites Centre,Bangor University gave a lesson on moisture in timber and different types of wood modification. The room was absolutely packed, with everyone taking a keen interest in the discussions and learning from experts. #WoodBUILD2024 #Timber #Forestry
