How do we reclaim narratives this Black History Month? 💭 For Michelle Harris, Head of Real Estate and Facilities for North Europe, it can be done by recognising the contributions that black people have made to British history. Michelle was born and raised in East Ham in London in the 70s. From the age of 8 to 12, she lived in Jamaica where her mother is from. It was in the Caribbean that she learned more about Black History, black heroes and their contribution to society. This experience gave her a broader, global and insightful perspective on Black History, that she might not have known if she had only lived in the UK. It is important to her to know and endorse significant figures in black history. We’re grateful to hear from our Hitachi Rail colleague on this highly important recognition month. A new space for collaboration and growth. 🙌 Hitachi Rail has recently opened a modern signalling technology laboratory in Sofia, Bulgaria with an electronic interlocking simulator. Thanks to our work with the University of Transport “Todor Kableshkov”, the lab offers an ideal testing platform for emerging and active talents in the Bulgarian rail sector. Digital signalling in central Europe 🌍. On #TeamHitachi Thursday this week, meet Attila Zalezak, Program Manager for our Turnkey Projects in Hungary. Throughout his career, Attila has taken the initiative to learn about other projects in the same market, so that he has full visibility of the work in his field – this has driven his career trajectory! Describing ETCS as the ‘solution of the future,’ he is inspired by the impact that the technology makes on railway safety and ‘extended visibility’ for driver experience. His most memorable career experience was a renovation project for the line between Rákos and Hatvan in Hungary. He was pleased to see results, with the implementation of new tracks, buildings, elevators, bridges and underpasses. The project helped to reduce travel time to Budapest, ensuring that more trains can travel safely at a higher speed. His work is helping to digitise the railway, which is a game changer in terms of reliability, enhanced diagnostics for maintenance purposes and safe and fast solutions. Hitachi Rail to renew CCTVs across over 50 stations on Singapore’s NSEWL 🎥 We’re happy to announce that Hitachi Rail, in consortium with STRIDES Engineering, has been awarded a major project by Land Transport Authority (LTA) Singapore to renew CCTV systems across the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL). Covering over 50 stations, this project will enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency with Video Management System (VMS) and Video Transmission Network (VTN) to manage both new and existing cameras across the NSEWL stations. The combined expertise will ensure each station is equipped with state-of-the-art security technology that is seamlessly integrated into the Operations Control Centre. We are also delivering the signalling system renewal, a project commissioned in 2017 for the North-South Line, followed by the East-West Line in 2018. This is one of the largest re-signalling projects in the world. We’re excited to continue improving Singapore’s oldest and busiest metro line and to be part of the step forward in the evolution of Singapore's public transport infrastructure. This October we had the privilege of welcoming the World Committee for Rail Standardisation IEC TC9 at our Naples factory for the centenary of the organisation. Thanks to this conference we were able to host the main representatives of the 45 national committees of the member states of the IEC, as well as the top experts in the field of rail standardisation. We are proud to work together on rail standards with a focus on new technologies and the sustainability challenges of the future.

At Hitachi Rail, we are committed to corporate social responsibility. One of the ways we do this is through sustainable initiatives for our people. This year we launched a 'Bike to Work' initiative in Italy during 'European Mobility Week' - one of the most widespread global sustainable mobility campaigns.
