Home-Start Horizons
Non-profit Organizations
We're here for parents when they need us the most, because childhood wont wait.
About us
Home-Start Horizons is the original Home-Start, a charity created in 1973 that birthed a movement that now spans 22 countries! As the original Home-Start, brain-child of our founder Margaret Harrison, we are proud to have supported tens of thousands of families and children across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland. We are a network of expert staff and highly trained volunteers supporting families with young children through their challenging times. We work to reduce Adverse Childhood Experiences and focus on the crucial First 1,001 days, to give children the best start in life.

It was a pleasure to host Liz Kendall MP, cabinet member and Chair of the Child Poverty Taskforce. Liz heard from services users of Home-Start Horizons of the impact of their support and the crucial need for their services, from Trustees of the challenges around the Early Help sector and from CEO Stuart Sullivan of the increasing need, gaps in services particularly around mental health and how Home-Start services need to be embedded to ensure parents get the support they need.

Thank you to Jack Roe for organising these fabulous goodie bags for mums who attended the Rutland and Huncote Mums in Mind groups. Each baby had a personalised gift bag containing nappies, wipes, clothes, towel, and a book. The mums want to say a massive thank you. #ForestersCare Foresters Financial

Another example of how our work makes such an impact for families and children. But we need your support so we can continue to help parents at this critical time.
Anyone who’s interested in real-life impact of an intervention around mental health, please have a look at this: https://lnkd.in/eKYciiFX At Home-Start Horizons it’s important we ensure what we do makes a difference, and this is one of many examples of a life-changing impact from our specialist post-natal illness intervention, Mums in Mind. As a therapist, interested in improving mental health, it’s also fascinating to see how the dynamic of a group intervention, with specialist support, skilled staff and wraparound work, can really engender change. And the change is significant. Anyone who has used the EPDS, GAD-7 or PHQ-9 will be impressed with the outcomes. If you want to support more of this work, please contact Home-Start Horizons #mentalhealth #postnatalillness #depression #impact

So proud that our amazing Trustee Happy Troumper was interviewed yesterday by Trisha Goddard ,on Talk TV, telling her inspirational story and the difference Home-Start Horizons made. She's now paying that back, and some, supporting a family and as a Trustee, ensuring our family support services best meet family needs. What a fantastic advocate we have. We answer the cries
I was lucky enough to attend the premier of our new campaign 'We answer the cries' recently: https://lnkd.in/eMHpEqaC It gives a flavour of the challenges of being a parent and the crucial nature of Home-Start interventions. Recently a Mum was asked what would have happened without the support of Home-Start Horizons, she said “I wouldn’t be here now. I was in such a bad place”

It's World Mental Health Day. For us as an organisation this means more than ever before. We record all of our referrals (most come from #Health, #Social Care and #EarlyHelp professionals) and managing mental health is one of the areas of support need. The figures used to be around 40% of referrals with a mental health need, now it's +95%! That's why we have now developed specialist Parent Mental Health Support projects, Dad's Mental Health Support and Mums in Mind post-natal depression courses. We are a charity, so you might be wondering what this has got to do with you. If you need mental health support, as a parent, please get in touch with us or your local Home-Start. If you want to make a difference to the lives of children in their formative years, by contributing to positive mental health of parents, get in touch. Or, if you're a corporate, with working parents with mental health or wellbeing needs, we have an employer offer to help support staff at work. Get in touch or please share 🙂

Important research that shows how important the work of Home-Start is, in preparing children for school and life.
A third of children starting reception are not school ready: https://lnkd.in/eMffyPd5 This research published last week should concern us all, “The UK has forgotten that healthy trees grow from well nurtured seeds and saplings. The evidence shows clearly that many of the problems blighting the NHS, school and criminal justice system exist because we didn’t adequately support young children before they arrived in school." We have seen this over the past decade, supporting families with pre-school children. Our projects, such as Big Hopes, Big Futures that focus on school readiness, rely on sparse grant funding and receive no Government or Local Authority investment! The last government are no doubt to blame, but the new government MUST change this and invest in society's future by supporting charities such as Home-Start Horizons who's work directly contributes to improving school readiness.
