  • Yesterday, we gathered in Manchester for Hospice UK's first Technology Leaders Conference. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many #HospiceTechLeaders working to make a difference in our sector! Some highlights from the conference included learning about: 🔐 what 'good' cyber security looks like 🤝 how technological innovation can transform hospice care for communities 🔎 key findings from Hospice UK's Digital health and inclusion in palliative and end of life care report (Read here: https://lnkd.in/efCW4Jht) 🧠 the ethical considerations of using AI in palliative care 🧩 real examples of implementing digital transformation from our sector and beyond 📈 how to build data capabilities at your organisation. With tech advancing at an unprecedented rate, this conference was a timely opportunity to come together as a sector. It's important to create spaces like this for conversation - the best innovation happens when people feel safe to share ideas 💡 Thank you to all our attendees for making it a wonderful day. And special thanks to our sponsors: Microsoft for Nonprofits, Smartdesc, The Access Group, Here (Care Unbound Ltd), Purple Tech, Total Enterprise Solutions, iRota, mhance, The Care Database, and Central Technology.

A new report from Marie Curie UK shows that the UK spends £11.7bn on people’s health in the last year of their life, largely on hospital care, even though most would rather die at home or in a hospice. Not only is this distressing for patients and families, but it’s also an inefficient use of public money which could be better spent on ensuring people have comfort and dignity at the end of their lives, in their place of choice. • "The Government is listening." Yesterday, we had an encouraging meeting with Minister of State for Care, Stephen Kinnock. Together with partners across the sector, we discussed how we can make sure good quality palliative and end of life care is there for all who need it. There's a huge opportunity to get this right in the 10 year plan being developed for the NHS in England. We're looking forward to working with the Minister and his colleagues on long term solutions for the future of hospice care.

  • Tomorrow, the Race Equity ECHO is exploring the impact of assisted dying legislation on minoritised ethnic communities. Please share with any colleagues who may wish to have a safe space to discuss this topic. Details below 👇

Race Equity ECHO: Assisted Dying – What Does It Mean for Racialised Staff, Patients, and Families? Join us on Wednesday 5th February at 15:30 for a Race Equity ECHO session where Jamilla Akhter Hussain and Karon Ornadel will be facilitating discussions on the impact of assisted dying legislation on minoritised ethnic communities. This session offers a safe and respectful space for people of colour working in palliative care to share perspectives—both personal and professional—on what this bill could mean for staff, patients, and families.   We particularly encourage participation from those in communities facing intersectional harm, including African, Caribbean, South East Asian, and South Asian heritage.   Please help us spread the word and support staff in attending. "An outcome where you had someone choose an assisted death because of a real or imagined fear that they couldn't get the right support would be a moral and practical disgrace." - Toby Porter, CEO, Hospice UK. Thank you to the committee for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill for bringing the hospice sector's voice to the discussion on this important bill.
