Hub for Applied Bioinformatics

Admissions are now open for the upcoming academic year of the Applied Bioinformatics MSc at King's College London. We’ve been so happy for the overwhelmingly positive response from our inaugural cohort of 42 students, who are fully immersed in and enjoying the program. What makes our program unique? We offer a split first intensive module specifically designed to bridge the knowledge gap between computational and life sciences students. With this foundational approach we make sure that everyone with the essential skills needed for success in bioinformatics. Additionally, students have access to the Hub for Applied Bioinformatics, which provides a collaborative space for students to connect, work on projects, and engage in hands-on experiences during their six-month research projects.Throughout the second semester, we also organize ad-hoc training sessions and seminars to enhance their learning. More than two years ago, when I first started working on the MSc in Applied Bioinformatics, I could never have imagined that so many bright and talented students would join us from the very beginning. It’s humbling to see them place their trust in me and the incredible team of lecturers I have the privilege of working with. I’m extremely grateful for that trust, and I sincerely hope they are happy with how we’ve designed the program to meet their ambitions. Global Atopic Dermatitis Atlas omics (GADA-omics) Project PhD studentship at King’s College London    📢 We're thrilled to announce that an opportunity for a PhD studentship in the GADA project is available now! 🎉    🗓️ Application Closing Date: 11 July 2024 ℹ️ About: GADA  The Global Atopic Dermatitis Atlas, also called GADA, is a worldwide, long-term project. The aim of GADA is to create and maintain an atlas where all data about atopic dermatitis is available in one place for everyone’s use, including patients/caregivers and health care providers, but also for governments, policymakers and health care payers (e.g. insurers). 📍 https://lnkd.in/dxFUPtmj 📍 https://lnkd.in/dREvwxpw   The overall objective of GADAomics is a multi-omics deep-dive into atopic dermatitis (AD, also known as eczema) globally. The project aim is to identify skin microbiome, metabolome and immune marker signatures associated with clinical AD phenotypes, different geographical settings and environmental exposures. Skin microbiome, metabolome as well as both cutaneous and systemic immune cytokine samples will be collected from AD and healthy participants. As a PhD Student you will analyse the metagenome, metabolome and immune cytokine datasets, using advanced bioinformatics approaches under the expert supervision of Dr. Alessandra Vigilante and Prof Carsten Flohr. This will involve the use of R, Python, high-performance computing (HPC) and machine learning algorithms where you'll identify significant associations between microbiome, metabolome, and immune data with AD phenotypes. The outcome of this work will reveal novel associations between microbes, microbial genes, skin metabolites and immune markers in AD and therefore has the potential to generate novel diagnostic and therapeutic targets.
