Yesterday I had the privilege to join the Hydrogen UK team in parliament to launch their latest report into the economic opportunities and benefits that can be delivered by developing a strong hydrogen supply chain in the UK. We heard from Sarah Jones MP, Minister for Industry, about the critical role hydrogen will play in decarbonising the economy and creating skilled jobs across the UK. The report explains that the UK is uniquely positioned to capitalise on the emerging hydrogen market. With our favourable geography, geology, and a strong pipeline of hydrogen projects, a UK hydrogen market could deliver 30,000 jobs and £7bn of Gross Value Add to the economy by 2030. At Uniper we are playing our part in the growth of a hydrogen economy - developing projects around the UK to drive decarbonisation and create valuable jobs.

We are thrilled to unveil our latest report, the “UK Hydrogen Supply Chain Strategic Assessment,” launched at our Hydrogen UK Parliamentary Reception yesterday with the support of Sarah Jones, Minister for Industry.    This comprehensive roadmap aims to position the UK as a global leader in the hydrogen industry, driving economic growth and creating thousands of jobs. Key insights include: 🔑 Leveraging the UK’s unique geography and skills from the North Sea. 🔑 Quick wins identified within the hydrogen supply chain including electrolyser stacks, power electronics, hydrogen network pipes, and more. 🔑 Strategic focus areas centred on compressors, reformer packages, and long-term investments in HV transformers and hydrogen gas turbines. Recommendations for future investments: 💡 Mandatory UK Supply Chain Assessment: include this in future funding models with a bonus to favour UK suppliers. 💡Central Support and Funding Body: coordinate investments in key supply chain areas. 💡Skills Strategy Alignment: focus on priority areas and timelines, including workforce retraining and upskilling. I was lucky enough to attend the Hydrogen UK Parliamentary Reception today. A brilliant opportunity to be able to hear from Minister Sarah Jones, Sarah Champion MP, and Hydrogen UK’s CEO Clare Jackson. The event provided a space to network and speak to experts in the industry. We still have a lot to learn about hydrogen, but by the sounds of the keynote speakers it has potential to be an important part of the UK’s journey to zero emission.
