Rather than focusing on carbon management, our attention should shift to managing our hydrogen. Fossil fuels are extracted and burned for energy, but in the process, they release carbon emissions at unsustainable levels. Yet, what we actually need from fossil fuels is hydrogen…the CO2 is simply an unfortunate byproduct!! So, why not harness the hydrogen directly from sustainable sources?? Water, biomethane, and other naturally occurring compounds offer pathways that keep carbon within the natural cycle, avoiding excess emissions. Hydrogen can fuel power generation, store energy, or be transformed into products like ammonia, methanol, renewable diesel, and even synthetic aviation fuel that can be stored and transported. By focusing on a robust hydrogen management system, we can address the root cause of global warming. We should rethink our approach to energy to ensure we get to net zero more quickly and sustainability. 🌍 The UK alone can’t solve climate change. While we contribute a small amount to global emissions, we feel the full impact. This is a global problem, and we must collaborate internationally to build sustainable, renewable ecosystems and show how to transition responsibly away from fossil fuels. 💰Carbon capture is a useful tool for reducing emissions, but we can’t lose sight of the bigger picture-transitioning away from unsustainable carbon intensive fuels entirely. We need to match investment in carbon capture with equal if not greater investment in green alternatives like hydrogen from electrolysis and biomass. This will accelerate the shift and move beyond debates about whether carbon capture is just a tactic to prolong fossil fuel use. 🌱As carbon capture drives up the cost of fossil fuels, more investment in electrolysis will help lower the cost of renewable hydrogen. So, let’s focus on scaling green hydrogen and other sustainable solutions as the same time! 🙏🤞 #GreenEnergy #Hydrogen #ClimateAction #Sustainability #NetZero #CleanEnergy https://lnkd.in/ePttsUUY

As a trader at Bear Stearns, I’d dealt with many wealthy clients, but there was something different about one investor, David Gelbaum. He was unassuming, quiet, and intensely private, happy to operate without recognition. But behind the modest exterior was an incredible vision. While most were focused on short term gains, David was thinking about the long term health of the planet. He wasn’t just about numbers; he wanted to make a difference. Through his Quercus Trust, David became one of the largest investors in early stage green technology companies. I watched him invest heavily in solar energy, biofuels, and other clean tech innovations at a time when many in finance were still sceptical. His approach wasn’t about chasing profits alone, it was about reshaping the future. David was investing in companies that could genuinely address the climate crisis, paving the way for a more sustainable world. What struck me most, though, was how David lived his values. On trips back to California, I’d see him driving his Toyota Prius, long before hybrid cars were mainstream. He didn’t need a flashy vehicle as a grand display of wealth. His choices were always thoughtful, reflecting his deep commitment to reducing his carbon footprint. This extended beyond his lifestyle to his philanthropic efforts. David wasn’t just writing cheques; he was buying and preserving vast stretches of land, like the 700,000 acres he set aside in the Mojave Desert for conservation. He understood that the planet needed more than just financial investment, it needed care and preservation for future generations. David’s influence profoundly shaped my career choices. It wasn’t just the business side, although I learned a great deal from him. It was his perspective on how wealth and influence could be harnessed for the greater good. His legacy of investing in green technology and protecting the environment inspired me to align my own career with those values. It’s one of the reasons why I’m focused on supporting green hydrogen now through my company Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions. Like David’s early investments in renewable energy, hydrogen is part of the next wave of solutions that can help decarbonise industries and further the clean energy revolution. In many ways, David’s ethos continues today with companies like Toyota. Once a pioneer with the Prius, they’re now leading the charge into a new era of planet-friendly vehicles with their fuel cell models, like the Toyota Mirai. Hydrogen fuel cells represent the future, clean, efficient, and scalable….Welsh even! Toyota much like David in his time, is taking bold steps to decarbonise transport and support sustainable energy. Success isn’t just measured by financial returns but by the lasting impact we leave behind for the world. #hydrogen #sustainability #greeninvestment #toyota

Hydrogen played a massive part at the Cenex Expo this year. Toyota Motor Corporation once agained wowed the crowds with their incredible vehicles and this year I finally got to see see the new Hilux in the flesh. This will be a top seller no doubt as will their CaetanoBus H2 City Gold and forklift trucks. Ford Motor Company showcased their hydrogen Transit chassis cab and Stellantis their hydrogen Vauxhall Vivaro which are also mainstream models and should prove hugely popular. It was great to see the Wrightbus coach power train on display and VIRITECH’s very neat HGV powertrain. Other highlights were the ULEMCo Ltd 100% hydrogen airport tug with up to 70 tonne towing capacity! And seeing the Bosch Mobility Ligier H2 supercar, albeit virtually. Thankfully Fuel Cell Systems Ltd. were also on hand with their new high pressure 850 HyQube to help answer concerns around dispensing. All in all a festival of hydrogen technology that will only get bigger and better next year as the market starts to recognise hydrogen as a viable technology to replace fossil fuels👏. A glimpse into the future of UK energy? The UK has doubled down on largely intermittent sources of energy. Two big challenges: Storing surpluses (when the sun shines and wind blows) to cover deficits (when they don't) is an essential challenge to solve. Enabling the consumption of energy harvested away from the grid/access to electric infrastructure e.g. driving on roads. Batteries are expensive and present ubiquitous designs use a bunch of nasty chemicals that are difficult to recycle (let along the nasty stuff from tailings ponds downstream in the supply chain). So, enter hydrogen? It's everywhere around us, and readily recyclable. Current problems with hydrogen: - economic storage (macro and micro) - input energy costs Chris Foxall and the team at Hyppo are leveraging surplus renewables to harvest hydrogen and working on solving the storage problem too! Hydrogen is then used to power a fleet of hydrogen vehicles, with the idea to power an increasing amount of the regions needs from harvested hydrogen energy! Wales also has a good natural advantage here too - rain is an excellent source of pure water to be converted into hydrogen! Thanks for showing me round Chris (and thanks Troels Adrian for the intro!) - exciting plans for H2Bay! #capitalraising #startups #fundraising #founders #venturecapital #investors #vc #vcfunding #technology #startup #tech

July 11th is Sir William Grove’s birthday 🥳. Born in Swansea and inventor of the fuel cell, he has left a legacy of hope for a greener planet protecting future generations 🌱. To celebrate, we drove members of the U3A Swansea chapter down to Rhosilli on the Gower, the UK’s first designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ in a fuel cell bus 🚌We took in Swansea police station which once was Grove’s family home, Swansea University’s Grove house, and the National Trust visitor centre overlooking Worm’s Head. A fitting birthday celebration for an incredible Welshman! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #hydrogen #sustainability #gower National Trust Swansea University u3a UK (The Third Age Trust) The Gower Society South Wales Transport Ltd Marubeni Europower CaetanoBus Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions Toyota Motor Corporation
