Plans to build the UK's first deep coal mine in more than 30 years have been quashed by the High Court, citing IEMA guidance on 'Assessing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Evaluating their Significance'. Campaign groups bringing legal action over the previous government's decision to grant planning permission for the site near Whitehaven in Cumbria, claimed the environmental impact of burning the coal extracted was not taken into consideration. In followed a landmark Supreme Court ruling in June, that found Surrey County Council had not considered the full climate impact when issuing a new oil extraction licence in the county. Saying they should have followed “easily performed” guidance from IEMA. IEMA Deputy CEO Martin Baxter said: "Not only is common sense finally prevailing...more importantly, we as a nation are finally making energy decisions based on evidence and scientific rigour. "If approved this project would have had significant negative environmental impacts and IEMA has been consistent in its view that this should be a material consideration in the decision on whether to grant approval." We are beyond excited to introduce you to our new look and website. We want this website to be a place where our partners and our network members can come to find resources, share their views and learn about what we have been working on. Caris Graham, who is our Senior Officer puts it best... "This rebrand reflects the journey of the initiative since its launch in March 2021. Over time, the structure and purpose have grown; we no longer just hold partners accountable but also focus on educating and connecting. "By prioritising collaboration, we strive to make equity, diversity, and inclusion a collective mission, not a competition." Explore the website to find out what commitments our partners have made and if you aren't involved yet...find out how you can get started. https://lnkd.in/diPGpsk

There's still time to book a place on tomorrow's session on 'green upskilling'! There is a #greenskills gap and we don’t currently have the knowledge or experience to reach #netzero and #biodiversity goals. How can we ensure that new talent entering the workforce has the relevant skills, but also look at how we can ensure that the existing workforce are prepared for the future? This session will provide insights into the skills gap, look at which sectors this is more prevalent in, and provide some context in how we can upskill and train individuals to get to where we need to be. Our speakers for this session include: James Hughes, Senior Programme Manager at Generation UK & Ireland Daniel Anderson, Sustainability Officer at Everyturn Mental Health Micheal Okekunle, Retrofit Assessor at Equans UK & Ireland Book now: https://bit.ly/3X68kkl
