About us
IFEAT – The International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades – is a trade association founded in 1977. It represents the interests of companies involved in the production, processing, trading and manufacturing of the many thousands of ingredients used in flavours, fragrances and aromatherapy. Recent decades have witnessed rapid growth in these sectors and worldwide every country and almost every individual uses some of these ingredients. These sectors have vast turnovers, employ millions of people, and involve enterprises ranging from small family operations through to large multinationals, involved in essential oil production, aroma chemical manufacture, flavour and fragrance compounding, trading and consumer product manufacturing. IFEAT’s current membership is 636 companies from 65 countries. It is managed by an Executive Committee, providing their services pro bono, and elected by members. A major activity is IFEAT’s annual international conference, which has developed into the most important annual meeting of all stakeholders involved in the sectors, affording incomparable business and social contact opportunities. Other activities include: Study tours undertaken in a different country each year. Support to flavour and fragrance courses provided at the Universities of Reading and Plymouth and sponsorship of students attending ISEO meetings. Support for research relevant activities, often involving collaborative projects with other organisation

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the IFEAT - The International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades for selecting me under the IFEAT Young Scientist Fellowship. A big thank you also goes to CSIR India for getting Foreign Travel Grant and Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology for International Travel Grant (ANRF-ITS), which made this experience possible. We are sad to announce the passing of Dr, Robert Bedoukian. Robert was a gifted chemist, an industry visionary, a leader of a successful company, a generous philanthropist, an involved member of his community, and a loving husband, father and grandfather. Robert will be missed by all of those his life and efforts touched. Dear F&F community, I had the pleasure of co-chairing, alongside Jonathan Bonello, a session devoted to the „EFEO IFEAT Scientific Platform on Proving Essential Oils‘ Unique Nature” at the 54th International Symposium on Essential Oils. A series of important lectures focused on various toxicological endpoints were presented. I hope that the connection between #IFEAT and the academic community will strengthen the efforts of the essential oils sector in delivering meaningful results that will help protect essential oils from overregulation. Jonathan Bonello and Daniel Strub at the 54th International Symposium on Essential Oils, in Hungary. This morning, they chaired a fascinating series of oral lectures in support of EFEO - European Federation of Essential Oils-IFEAT Scientific Platform on Proving Essential Oils’ Unique Nature. Jocelyne Kurtz gave a fantastic overview and introduction to the platform. The EU's new chemical classification rules could lead to natural plant extracts like essential oils being labelled as hazardous, even if they're safe when used as a whole. The IFEAT-EFEO platform is gathering scientific evidence to prove that essential oils, as a whole, are often safer than their individual components. This will help ensure that these valuable natural products can continue to be used safely. We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of former IFEAT Executive Committee Chairman José Luis Adrian. José was closely involved in the foundation and early growth of IFEAT. He attended the preliminary meetings in London and joined the first Executive Committee as the only representative of France. In Cannes on 15 March 1980, José became the second Chairman of IFEAT’s Executive Committee. By the end of his chairmanship, IFEAT had grown to 140 members from 26 countries. During his Chairmanship, José organised IFEAT’s first official trip to China in 1982, with a 10-member delegation taking place over three weeks and involving several members of IFEAT’s Executive Committee. In 1994, he organised the very successful Avignon IFEAT Congress. In addition, he provided assistance to the IFEAT Study Tour to France in 2015. We send our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
In loving memory of my Dad who lost his battle to Parkinson’s disease. Jose Luis Adrian passed away on August 28th. He will always be in our hearts. He lead the family business from 1972 to 2001, following his father and grandfather. He co-founded the IFEAT with other industry leaders. He cofounded SAPAD, one of the first companies to produce certified organic essential oils. He ran the Ingredients division of Charabot until his retirement. He continued to share his passion for natural aromatic raw materials with many students. He also loved to share his knowledge with several new entrepreneurs. Natural ingredients for flavors and fragrances were his passion. He lived his entire life for that. He was also a loving husband, father and grandfather to us.
