The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)'s 3xrenewables initiative is crucial to reach #SDG7 (energy for all) by 2030. Despite record-breaking renewables growth in 2023, the global target risks falling short, and deployment shows significant regional disparities, with the Global South increasingly being left behind. Ignite is proud to be a leader across Africa's renewable infrastructure development sphere. Read more about the initiative here: https://lnkd.in/g7yYH8Vp https://lnkd.in/dVgVDAWN

Today is International Day of Rural Women! This year's theme, “Rural Women Sustaining Nature for Our Collective Future,” shines a spotlight on the crucial role rural women play in building climate resilience through sustainable land and resource management. On this day, we honor the incredible contributions of rural women as guardians of health, sustainability, and empowerment within their communities, driving us all toward a more equitable and sustainable future. Women are responsible for half of the world’s food production, all while serving as stewards of our environment and biodiversity. As farmers, they’ve developed resilience to climate change by practicing sustainable agriculture in harmony with nature, adopting drought-resistant seeds, applying organic soil management techniques, and leading vital community-based reforestation and restoration efforts. At Ignite Power, we are proud to stand with the resilient rural women of Sub-Saharan Africa, supporting them with sustainable solutions that promote gender equality and build brighter futures for future generations.

Just released! GOGLA's Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report 2024, in partnership with ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program and The World Bank Group, highlights key insights on energy access: In 2022, 685 million people still lacked electricity, with 1.6 billion more enduring unreliable power. By 2030, 660 million could still be in the dark unless we accelerate change. The off-grid solar (OGS) sector connected 561 million people in 2023 and contributed 55% of new connections in Sub-Saharan Africa. Investment in OGS reached $1.2 billion in 2022-23, and public funding is on the rise. The future of energy access lies in scaling OGS solutions! #OGS #EnergyAccess #ClimateAction #SDG7 Download the full report: https://lnkd.in/d8kExr_F

Africa is a hub of innovation, technological revolutions, and untapped potential, where urgent needs present incredible opportunities for bold entrepreneurs and investors. Yet, many still shy away, labeling the continent as “too risky.” In my article for Next Billion, I delve into one of the most challenging aspects of operating in Africa, foreign exchange fluctuations, and explore how local banks, businesses, and governments address this issue head-on, proving that doing business in Africa is feasible and highly rewarding, and Ignite Power is the perfect example. Global Practice Lead at Economist Impact | Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council

It was a busy few days at New York #ClimateWeek. But always great fun to meet with so many friends and colleagues, host key conversations, and present our findings and forthcoming projects. Here are just a few highlights… On Tuesday morning I hosted a breakfast session of the Economist Impact CSO Leaders Club, a forum that we’ve brought together several times around the world in 2024. Thanks to Barry Parkin of Mars and Karen Pflug from Ingka Group for kicking things off. The same afternoon I helped lead a discussion hosted by Ignite Power and Google on AI and Off-grid to power African access. Always humbled in front of Angela Homsi. I had a great chat with Amy Brachio at EY about people centered transitions, technology, and all sorts of things which we’ll post soon. On Wednesday I hosted a salon on decentralized energy grids with Kraken (thanks to Zoisa North-Bond of Octopus, Yashi Dadhich, Ted Kelly, and James Gaughan). I also discussed sustainable transport with Jeff Marootian, Eric Wilson, Heather Thompson, and Omar Vargas. I was so pleased to host a working lunch with friends including Ditte Joergensen, Damilola Ogunbiyi, Ann Mettler, Anna Shpitsberg, Kevin KARIUKI, Heather Buchanan, Bob Holycross, Drew Murphy, Vaishali Nigam Sinha, Samuel Tumiwa, Ashley Thomas and others, looking at clean energy investment opportunities especially in emerging markets. And thanks to the NCUSAR folks for a lovely dinner with Prince Turki al-Faisal. Thursday we held client and partner meetings, plus it was good to pop by Goldman Sachs to discuss finding returns on sustainable or impact projects. Thanks to everyone especially our amazing events and programming team at Economist Impact.
