📢 We are delighted to announce the launch of the IGNITE Network+ Mentoring Programme 2025: Action Learning Circles! We are now recruiting facilitators and circle participants to take part in the IGNITE Network+ Mentoring Programme to support researchers from underrepresented and minoritised groups in energy research. The aim is to support career advancement, facilitate networking and develop a community of researchers in energy, across academia and industry. Participants will have the opportunity to share lived experiences and to support one another. Our innovative approach to mentoring will enable participants to find peers with diverse backgrounds and experiences who share common interests or learning objectives, to focus on the personal development of those involved, to grow and learn together. Interested? You can find out more on our web-site: https://lnkd.in/dXe9ZtZA and complete the Expression of Interest by 31-Oct-2024 to join us at our online briefing session week on 4 Nov, 10am! #DiverityInEnergy #mentoring #actionlearning #ECRs #EnergyResearch
IGNITE Network+
Higher Education
Our aim is to help the energy research community develop an inclusive culture that ensures equal opportunities for all.
About us
The IGNITE Network+ aims to support sustainable, abundant, clean and equitable energy for all, by harnessing the talents of energy researchers from all backgrounds. The current lack of diversity in energy researchers stems not from a lack of interest, talent or ambition in underrepresented individuals, but from systemic inequalities in UK systems and institutions. The IGNITE Network+ will address diversity issues by: collecting data that can expose systemic inequality; designing, testing and implementing disruptive initiatives; monitoring the success of interventions and activities; identifying, disseminating and encouraging good practice. In parallel, we will work to support individuals from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds through a mixture of organisational interventions, mentorship, advice and advocacy. To achieve the changes to energy systems needed to meet net-zero carbon by 2050 requires innovation, and its translation into industry, at pace. Increased diversity in energy researchers will significantly improve our chances of success. Research has shown that diversity in the workforce, if managed effectively, increases innovation, brings greater scientific impact and improves economic growth. Despite an increasing societal awareness of the value of equality and diversity, a decade of diversity initiatives has had little effect. UK engineering, in particular, has some of the poorest diversity statistics in Europe: 8% of professional engineers are female and 6% are black and minority ethnic (BAME), this compares to UK population statistics of 51% and 14% respectively. Reliable data on other forms of diversity such as disability and sexual orientation in engineering are unavailable.

Great to see how neurodiversity started being celebrated in Engineering! The more we discuss openly about different conditions, the easier it gets to address the challenges some neurodiversity engineers (and not only) may encounter in the workplace but also we learn to appreciate the unique strengths they bring to the profession. #engineers #neurodiversity #dyslexia
I’m proud to be supporting Dyslexia in Engineering Day and to raise awareness about the importance of neuroinclusion in our industry. As engineers, we are constantly solving complex problems, and thinking differently is one of our greatest strengths. Neurodiverse individuals, including those with dyslexia, often approach challenges with fresh perspectives, creative problem-solving skills, and the ability to see the bigger picture—qualities that are invaluable in engineering. By promoting neuroinclusion, we embrace the diversity of thought that drives innovation and progress in our field. It’s time we recognize that these different ways of thinking are assets, not obstacles. When we create environments that allow everyone to contribute their strengths, we open the door to more innovative solutions and stronger teams. Join me in supporting this important cause! Let’s continue the conversation and take action to make neuroinclusion a priority in engineering. The Royal Society of Chemistry is delighted to announce the launch of our survey and case studies input form for our current project, Disability-Inclusive Laboratories in the Chemical Sciences. We would be grateful if you could share this across your networks. Also, if you know someone specifically who has done some adjustments then please encourage them to complete the case studies. Here's how you can help: Fill in and share our survey aimed at all laboratory users (with or without specific experience of disability), to gather information about the landscape of (in)accessibility in chemistry laboratories and disability inclusivity in organisational culture. The survey is available at this link: https://lnkd.in/enBAvJgp – and please do share this widely with colleagues. Fill in the case studies form, which aims to collect examples of solutions and innovation enabling disabled chemists to access labs, and/or share with any colleagues who may be able to provide examples: https://lnkd.in/evBsJp7U. Promote the socials posts: https://lnkd.in/eA2RC85Q https://lnkd.in/er9MdkFT The launch of our survey also coincides with the launch of our Neurodiversity in the chemical sciences webpage - https://lnkd.in/euVJA-FY

Neurodivergent individuals are an underutilised talent pool in the chemical sciences, often bringing strengths and skills such as innovative thinking and high attention to detail, but traditional recruitment processes can inadvertently discriminate against them. Here are just a few ways to make recruitment processes more inclusive to neurodivergent people: - Avoid jargon in the job advert, and be explicit about the skills required - Proactively offer remote and flexible working options - Provide the interview schedule and questions in advance - Allow plenty of time for answers during the interview, and offer breaks - Consider the sensory environment of the interview room – avoid bright lights, noises and distractions - Don’t judge candidates based on ability to make eye contact Remember that these inclusive practices benefit everyone, not just neurodivergent people, and should be offered as standard. To find out more about neurodivergence in the chemical sciences, and access resources for neurodivergent individuals, their employers, and allies, visit our new webpage: https://rsc.li/3XpPZ1M

We’re delighted to announce a new national Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Sharing Hub+. Jointly led by Prof. Vania Dimitrova and Prof. Louise Jennings, at the University of Leeds, the EDI Hub+ will bring together individuals from across the engineering, physical and mathematical sciences community to share knowledge and good practice, and address diversity challenges within the sector. Working with universities, learned societies, industry partners, professional bodies and international collaborators, it will focus on three themes: 🟢 Career pathways: including removing barriers to doctoral study for underrepresented groups, providing inclusive support at key career transitions and growing diverse leadership 🟢 Research funding and processes: including trailing and evaluating alternative approaches to funding opportunities and peer review, and reducing the burden on specific groups 🟢 Organisational culture: including making workplaces more inclusive and accessible, fostering inclusive leadership and adopting equitable work-life balance approaches. The hub will build on the work of existing initiatives, including the EPSRC Inclusion Matters projects, and will collaborate with other programmes supported by UKRI such as the EDI Caucus. EPSRC Executive Chair Professor Charlotte Deane said: “The diversity challenges we face deprive individuals of opportunity, with the result that the research and innovation system, and society more widely, cannot benefit from their contributions and perspectives. “The EDI Hub+ aims to address the persistent challenges we see across the engineering, physical and mathematical sciences community by harnessing our collective accumulated knowledge. “It will consolidate the work of existing initiatives and lead new programmes of work, ensuring that the best solutions can be brought to bear on challenges specific to the engineering, physical sciences and mathematics communities.” Head to the UKRI website for further information.
