It's fair to say this is not your standard bracket design. This was created by NASA's Evolved Structures system, an AI program used to construct metal brackets and mounts for its space exploration missions.  The system’s produces designs that are much stronger than human-designed counterparts while saving up to two-thirds of the weight. After a brief summer break we are delighted to resume our events calendar with a visit to the SSE Thermal Peterhead Power Station. Peterhead Power Station is Scotland's largest gas-fired plant, and the site of a proposed decarbonisation upgrade. Learn about the station’s history, the planned CCS and hydrogen solutions, and how it aims to offset 1.5MT of CO2—5% of the UK’s 2030 target. The visit includes a presentation on future CCS plans by SSE’s team. The tour will be a fascinating insight to explore cutting-edge developments in flexible, low-carbon energy generation. The tour will take place on Friday 27th September, 9.30am - 12.30pm. A massive thank you to Flotation Energy who recently hosted a number of boat trips to their Kincardine Floating Offshore Windfarm. Our members jumped at the chance to attend, with slots for all of our allocated excursions sold out within an hour! Getting the opportunity to see the turbines up close was fantastic, and well received by all who attended. Located 15 km off the Aberdeen Coast, Kincardine is the world’s largest grid-connected floating windfarm. It’s turbines, at around 190 metres tall, are also the largest turbines to be placed on floating substructures. Kincardine has proven technological and commercial readiness of floating offshore wind. During the visit, members were informed of the new Green Volt and Cenos Floating Offshore Wind developments, both located in the North Sea. They will deliver renewable electricity to oil and gas platforms by replacing electricity currently generated by gas turbines, while simultaneously delivering renewable electricity to the UK grid.

During the development phase of a project, both installation and operational load cases are considered. Although in some instances a recovery case may be assessed, it is unlikely that this will cover all potential recovery methods, vessels, weather criteria, or the integrity of the installation as it approaches the end of its design life. This leads to the question: How can this affect decommissioning? Lead Discipline Engineer Hayley Welsh CEng of PDI will answer this question during our next event, when she will present on 'Engineering for Successful Decommissioning'. Big thanks to Tom Baxter who presented "Process Safety: Five Decades of War Stories" to our members at Robert Gordon University for our May event.   Tom covered a range of major incidents, from the 1970’s to the present day, that he was involved with or had an impact on him as a petrochemical engineer. He explained in detail the causes of the issue, the outcome, and lessons learned from each event. Some useful takeaways included: - Engineers are good at managing risk - It’s the risks we don’t identify that are often the problem - Non-routine operations are where a design can be most tested - There is no substitute for competency - Identifying a change can be very difficult - Lessons learned are key, but they are often not learned   A full copy of the presentation slides can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/em2_eKf5
