We’re delighted to be leading a new project alongside The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to study responses to cancer immunotherapy. The platform has already received more than £20 million in public and industry investment and will involve thousands of people from across the UK receiving immunotherapy. During a 1720s smallpox outbreak in Boston, the life-saving ideas of a formerly enslaved African man, Onesimus, significantly reduced the risk of death from the disease. He had previously described to a local doctor and a minister a procedure that gave him a mild form of smallpox, protecting him from future infections. Despite skepticism, this early form of inoculation proved effective, saving hundreds of lives and informing the introduction of vaccines that led to the eventual eradication of smallpox. Today, we celebrate all the brilliant black scientists, like Onesimus, who have contributed to the development of the medical field. Their innovations continue to protect and heal communities around the world. #blackhistorymonth #WeAreIMCR
