About us
The Imperial Venture Mentoring Service (IVMS) is Imperial’s first flagship mentoring programme, supporting the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs with an elite group of industry mentors. The objective is to provide Imperial’s growing population of entrepreneurial students and staff with unbiased advice and expertise through a structured mentorship programme which helps these ventures realise their true potential. The IVMS is modelled on the successful MIT version of the programme which has been running for 20 years and includes unique elements such as team mentoring (each venture will always be mentored by 2 or more during the mentor sessions). Tuesday evening saw three brilliant climate positive ventures Radiant Matter, Guerrilla.Co and Air Aware Labs pitch for venture mentorship 💫. The ventures received insightful feedback from our incredible mentors and engaged with thought-provoking questions such as, "How are you going to prioritise the sector opportunities", "What impact would this solution have in rural areas" and "How costly is this compared to typical methods" 🤔. Treeva won Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2024! ✨ 🎉 Thank you so much to the entire friendly Samsung SfT team, including Tom, Lisa, Jessie, Eva, and Andy. We are so grateful for this opportunity, and it was brilliant to meet you all. A huge thank you to (and big hugs for) our awesome SfT mentor Wincent, who has been such an incredible pillar of support for us to learn strategy, improve our business and pitch decks but also feel confident and motivated throughout. Thank you so much! Throughout the program, it has been amazing to gather guidance and learnings from various workshops such as design thinking and prototyping. Some key learnings: 🚌 Listen and solve the real problem We know the transport industry has the highest reliance on fossil fuels of any sector, so we initially set out to reduce the industry’s carbon emissions. However, while speaking to several companies, we understood that safety is the transport industry’s no. 1 priority, so disrupted and unreliable operation is making the transition to renewables too difficult. Now this is the core problem we are solving with Treeva. 🔧 Design, test, feedback, repeat We’ve had several iterations of prototyping, testing and feedback from customers to develop our Treeva turbine, and now understand the importance of these cyclic iterations and design thinking. These learnings have helped us develop a highly efficient and reliable turbine with significant cost and emission savings, and we’re always continuing to innovate. ✏ Small edits can make a huge difference We are grateful for going through several versions of our pitch deck with Wincent and Lisa. One of our last-minute changes was adding a short title to signpost each slide, which made the pitch and transitions much smoother. I feel the value of small improvements even more now than ever before. Congratulations to Samuel and Dexter from Team Optimum for winning the 16-18 age category, and to all the teams throughout the competition, it’s been so inspiring to see your drive and dedication.
