This is how I spend my Friday morning at 3:20am. Inventing is easy but manufacturing is the difficult part. I have learned a lot about manufacturing in the last seven years especially when it comes to 3D printing which dramatically changed and improved the way and the speed I prototype and manufacture things. This is the calculation which I have to make, in order to ensure this particular part of iWash is within 0.2mm accuracy along each corner of four different layers of variable sizes and thicknesses fused together. I have to consider the variable deflections and shrinkages happens throughout the multiple steps of the manufacturing process of this part. This includes working out, 3D printed part shrinkage, 3D printing variability, silicon shrinkage, moulded part shrinkage as well as the structural changes as a result of exposure to humidity when the part will be used in iWash. To make things even more complex, different layers have different thickness and sizes therefore, the deflection rates are different for each layer so I have to work that all out and go back to the original drawing table (CAD design) and make the relevant corrections for each layer. This is just a single and a simple looking part of the product, however there is a lot of multiple calculations and careful thinking going behind the scenes in order to ensure the precision is there which is of paramount importance for this particular part. Unfortunately most people don’t get to see or realise what goes in the background. So here is a sneak peek. #slidecleaner #cellcounter #inventions #innovation #manufacturing #precision At www.imrali.co.uk
