We ran a poll last week asking the question “Do you know when the first ever computer virus was detected?” You voted: 🦠 1960s = 47% 🦠 1970s = 26% 🦠 1980s = 20% 🦠 1990s = 7% Here is the low down on viruses! The first computer virus is generally considered to be CREEPER a program created in 1971 by Bob Thomas of BBN. Creeper was designed as a security test to see if a self-replicating program was possible. It was successful, and would replicate itself on each new hard drive it infected. Creeper's message was "I'M THE CREEPER. CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!". However in the 1980s, Elk Cloner was said to be the first known microcomputer virus that spread "in the wild", i.e., outside the computer system or laboratory in which it was written. It attached itself to the Apple II operating system and spread by floppy disk. Here are some other notable early computer viruses: 🦠 The Rabbit Virus: Developed in 1974, this virus was designed with malicious intent to disrupt systems and cause crashes. 🦠 The First Trojan: Created in 1975 by John Walker, this virus attached to user programs, files, or games to propagate itself. 🦠 ILoveYou: Originating in Manila in 2000, this worm spread worldwide through corporate email systems. 🦠 The Morris worm: Created by Robert Tappan Morris, this worm infected DEC VAX and Sun machines connected to the Internet. 🦠 The Father Christmas worm: This worm attacked DEC VAX machines connected to the DECnet Internet, delivering a Christmas greeting to affected users. 🦠 Concept: Discovered in 1995, this macro virus infected Word documents. Computer viruses have evolved from the early days of experimental code to sophisticated threats targeting businesses worldwide. As technology advances, so do the tactics of cybercriminals! ♻️ Every year, globally, we dump a massive 2.12 billion tons of Municipal solid waste. If all this waste was put on trucks, they would go around the world 24 times! Not only that, but the amount we dump is expected to increase by 70% by 2050. This is catastrophic in terms of how this will potentially increase Greenhouse Gases, and toxic pollutants. While businesses must take the leading role, in reality, we ALL have to take responsibility. 4 Ways to Reduce Waste Going to Landfills With landfill space becoming increasingly scarce and decomposition slow, it's essential to find ways to minimize the waste we send there. By adopting sustainable practices like reusing, recycling, and reducing, you can play a vital role in protecting the environment. ♻️ Recycle Recycling has significantly reduced the amount of waste that ends up in landfills each year. It keeps raw materials in circulation, extending their lifecycle through various products. By recycling items like plastic, glass, wood, and tires, we can prevent these materials from polluting our environment. Discover more about the World's Largest Recycling Plants and their efforts in diverting waste from landfills. ♻️ Compost Landfills are often oxygen-deficient, which hampers the decomposition of compostable materials. Instead of throwing biodegradable waste into the trash, use compost bins to divert it from landfills. Composting provides the necessary aeration, moisture, and warmth for materials like paper, food scraps, lawn clippings, and even hair to break down efficiently. ♻️ Make Thoughtful Purchases Be conscious of what you buy, especially single-use plastics that are likely to end up as trash. Opt for eco-friendly or recycled products whenever possible to reduce your environmental footprint. ♻️ Repurpose and Repair Many items that find their way to landfills are still in good condition or can be easily repaired or repurposed. Donating usable items, like clothing, to those in need can significantly reduce the waste that ends up in landfills. By giving your unwanted belongings a second life, you contribute to waste reduction.
