In March, the European Parliament officially passed the AI Act. In May, the Council of the EU did the same. In July, the Act was entered into the Official Journal of the EU. Today it enters into force — to be fully effective from 2 August 2026. It represents the world’s first major democratic law to regulate Artificial Intelligence. With the European Commission’s launch of the new AI Office in May, the first high-level meeting of the forthcoming AI Board taking place in June and the European Parliament’s pending plans to create a working group on implementation of the AI Act, the EU appears determined to remain at the cutting-edge of regulating this critical domain. During his five years as Commissioner, Breton has stood among the popular faces of the European Union: he has ramped up vaccine production, moved forward the concept of European defence, and has implemented regulation to make the digital space a fairer place. However, a few bad omens shroud the French’s sky, from divided support among the Member States for his dirigiste inclination to a weakened standing domestically, therefore begging the question of his renomination.
