Dr Karen Spink, Head of Medicines at Innovate UK, has written an article about the importance of putting the child first when creating future life-changing cancer therapies. She outlines some of the reasons why relatively little research and investment are focused on this field of medicine, as well as some of the reasons to be optimistic about the future. The article references the work carried out with venture creation specialists Deep Science Ventures to explore the landscape of therapeutic approaches in paediatric oncology. The resulting white paper Revolutionising Paediatric Cancer Treatment, launched in February 2024, highlights opportunities with significant potential to attract the investment needed to deliver transformative therapies for children with cancer. Today marks significant milestones for Innovate UK. Dr. Stella Peace assumes leadership and continues to build on our strong partnership with Enterprise Singapore by signing a new 3-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ms Cindy Khoo, Managing Director of Enterprise Singapore, at Digital Catapult in London. This MoU, witnessed by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Heng Swee Keat, and Catherine West MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, reaffirms our commitment to driving innovation and business success between the UK and Singapore. 🇬🇧🤝🇸🇬 Since our last MoU in 2021, we’ve achieved incredible results, including: - Supporting 42 UK-Singapore collaborative R&D projects, representing around £30 million in joint funding across key technology areas. - Assisting over 150 UK SMEs to explore opportunities in Singapore and connect with collaborative partners through our Global Business Innovation Programmes, Global Incubator Programmes, and Global Explorers Programme. Demand for collaboration remains high. Our programmes continue to be popular showcasing the vast potential for UK businesses and research organisations in Singapore to work together to drive economic growth. This MoU opens exciting opportunities for future collaboration in cutting-edge technologies such as semiconductors, quantum technology, and AI. Innovate UK values our deep partnership with Enterprise Singapore, and we look forward to driving further innovation and impact together over the next three years to 2027. We are pleased to announce that Innovate UK has awarded £3.5 million to nine groundbreaking projects as part of the CLIMATES (Circular critical materials supply chains) programme, led by Innovate UK. 🎉 These projects will explore innovative ways to secure the UK’s supply chain of critical Rare Earth Elements (REEs) — vital components for green technologies like electric vehicles and wind turbines. 🚗🔋 From extracting rare minerals from volcanic tuffs to recovering valuable elements from mining waste, each partnership is paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient supply chain. These pioneering efforts will help reduce reliance on imports, drive green innovation, and ultimately support the UK’s journey to Net Zero. 🌱 💬 “Rare earth elements play a crucial role in advanced manufacturing, including electric vehicles and wind turbines, so its excellent news that the CLIMATES fund is continuing to leverage our world-leading expertise in R&D and making supply chains more resilient.” — Sarah Jones MP, Minister for Industry. 🔗 Read the full press release to learn more about how these projects are shaping the future of sustainable manufacturing in the UK: https://ow.ly/PgLC50TzNx0
