  • 🎙️ Listening and Learning Together podcast: Episode 2 - How is long-term funding a two-way win (for charities and funders)? How is the dominance of short-term grants getting in the way of charities delivering the best possible service for their communities? Charities are calling out for revisions to the way in which funding is given, in order to enable them to do their best work and multi-year funding provides a vital alternative in the funding mix. In this episode of Listening and Learning Together, IVAR’s Director Ben Cairns is joined by Co-op Foundation’s Charlotte Wilson, Emma Goldthorpe of the Eric Wright Charitable Trust and Lindsay Oliver, Founder of New Beginnings Peer Support. They discuss the negative impacts upon charities and their beneficiaries of working for repeated short-term bids and share consensus on: 🔹 How multi-year funding can improve security, retention and wellbeing of quality staff, whilst allowing smaller charities to grow more, gather powerful data and respond flexibly to emerging needs. 🔹 How multi-year models can help improve relationships throughout the chain, from communications with the funder all the way through to beneficiaries, building trust that charities will be there to support their causes long term. 🤔 So what are the barriers to increasing multi-year funding and how can we move forward collectively? I am sad to share that Tracey Gyateng is leaving 360Giving next month to focus on family commitments. Tracey has done a fantastic job on delivering UKGrantmaking and will be greatly missed. We thank her for all her hard work and wish her well for the future. I’m pleased to let you know that Emily Dyson will be joining 360Giving as Interim Deputy Chief Executive until July 2025. We have already worked with Emily on a number of projects in her current role at Institute For Voluntary Action Research and are very excited to have her join our small team. Look out for ambitious new developments that we have planned in the year ahead!

  • 🆕 blog: What does trusting your grantees really mean? In the first of a new series of blogs and podcasts we hear from Sheila Jane Malley, Trustee at Co-op Foundation and Rosa, the UK Fund for Women and Girls about the move by many funders towards an open and trusting approach. In this blog Sheila talks about the opportunities an open and trusting approach brings to funders and the relationship it builds between funders and grantees. Thought-provoking questions are asked about what work is aligned to your purpose as a funder, what is likely to succeed and what will make an impact. We would love to hear your thoughts 🤔 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eV-tWBpy

This month's Member Spotlight turned to member the Texel Foundation - the philanthropic arm of The Texel Group. We spoke to them about their Staff Support and Development Fund which aims to support frontline charity staff, how becoming a member of Institute For Voluntary Action Research's Open and Trusting grant making community has improved how they work with charities, as well as how our Small Funders Network has allowed them to connect with other small funders. The full Q+A can be read here ➡ https://lnkd.in/et2NkBVf At London Funders, one way in which we support our members to be more effective, joined-up and informed in their funding practices is through our thematic member-led networks; from Housing and Homelessness to Research and Evaluation, to Small Funders - each providing an opportunity for members with similar focuses to come together, connect and learn from each other. You can find out more about the different ways we connect and support our membership here ➡ https://lnkd.in/eDHF2gyY

  • Worth a read for those funding (or fundraising for) environmental/climate issues - this new report from EfN really aligns with the importance of an Open and Trusting approach to grant-making

Our new report to help nurture better funder-fundraiser relationships is live: ✨ Increasing the effectiveness of environmental funder-fundraiser relationships  ✨ We all know that growing the amount of funding for environmental work is a priority, but an equally important one is to increase the effectiveness of funding and maximise the impact of every pound spent. This new report examines areas of ineffectiveness in the current environmental funding landscapes and homes in on 20 key issues. With feedback from environmental fundraisers and showcasing existing solutions, we offer six cross-cutting broad recommendations for funders to consider going forward: 1️⃣ Focus on people and outcomes rather than projects and outputs 2️⃣ Underpin all behaviour with trust and flexibility 3️⃣ Make decisions based on a combination of long-term thinking and urgency 4️⃣ Design application and reporting processes carefully & relax requirements where feasible 5️⃣ Collaborate as much as possible 6️⃣ Create and embrace opportunities to hear from grantholders Many of our findings are not new, but we hope bringing them together will catalyse changes going forward. Let us know what you think! Read now: https://lnkd.in/e3sBqBBn #environment #philanthropy #funding #fundraising #trusts #foundations #funders #fundraisers

  • 💡 In case you missed it: Time to end the dominance of short-term grants. Following on in our theme of an Open & Trusting approach to grant-making, we want to reshare a paper released earlier this year about the case for multi-year funding. Our evidence review demonstrates that short-term grants have not earned their place as the dominant model and may support funders to have conversations with their boards about longer-term funding. In this paper, we look at: • What the research says about the benefits such funding delivers • The progress being made on increasing the availability of multi-year funding • Reflections on how best to overcome some of the barriers to this.
