"Ministers like me needed greater training,” says former HS2 minister Paul Maynard. He adds that we must focus on transport goals rather than political ones. If we fail to change this mindset, major infrastructure projects in the future may never be completed. These comments from the ex-minister come in response to some of the key findings set out by the ICE as part of our HS2 report. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dUrxsC-F #Transport #CivilEngineering #HS2
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
Civil Engineering
Civil engineers shaping the world. Representing more than 97,000 members worldwide.
About us
Our mission is to put civil engineers "at the heart of society". We are a qualifying body, a centre for the exchange of knowledge and a provider of resources to encourage innovation and excellence in the profession worldwide. Our 97,000 members help to create the structures and systems that sustain society. They are responsible for designing, building, maintaining and improving bridges, roads, canals, docks, office buildings, hospitals, schools, airports, power stations, railways, flood defences, water-treatment facilities... everywhere. We make sure that the high standards needed to become a professional civil engineer are met. Professionals who are awarded membership of our Institution are among the best in the world. In the UK, we talk to national, devolved and local government and to the media. Our experts give informed comments to journalists, politicians and the public. We let politicians know what our members think. We give our opinion to government in writing and in person, and encourage our members to comment on consultation documents.

Growing up, Mali Mehl faced significant challenges with reading and spelling. Finding out that she had dyslexia at the age of 15 brought much-needed support and confidence. Despite the challenges, she’s keen to point out that it’s not all bad - “The best thing about getting the dyslexia diagnosis is using it for humour. More than once, I've spelled something and read words so wrong that sentences get an entire new meaning.” Read more about Mali’s story here: https://lnkd.in/de5PsVHi #CivilEngineering #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek

Meet Ryan Clarke, the ICE’s latest Chartered Infrastructure Engineer. He was inspired by his family to strive for chartership - “I told them years ago that I was going to do this, particularly my dad, so I had to prove the point!” Ryan has a background in wastewater management and asset planning. But more recently, he’s taken on a digital role and uses technology to enhance project delivery. To read more about Ryan’s story, or why he chose to qualify as an infrastructure engineer, click here: https://lnkd.in/e2GJ8AZH #CharteredInfrastructureEngineer #CivilEngineering #DigitalEngineering

How many of your journeys do you make by car? World Car Free Day yesterday prompted us to reflect on whether we can cut down this number. But for some people, that's simply not an option, as they lack other reliable alternatives. In the UK, this tends to be the case in the countryside. Earlier this year, ICE South West Future Leader, Alex Buley, explored the topic, based on a roundtable discussion with the region's Early Careers Network and ICE President Prof. (Dr) Anusha Shah.
