Soft #law, particularly when devised by #lawyers themselves, could help in the pursuit of more ethical #legal practice, states a report produced following a roundtable convened by Chatham House, co-hosted by International Bar Association (IBA) officers and members with support of the IBA’s Legal Policy & Research Unit. Discussions at the event centred on the challenges facing the profession daily, including whether existing guidance is enough to meet those challenges, and how law firm leaders and regulators might, or should, respond to the increasing shift in focus towards a more global, socially conscious set of expectations for the profession. International Bar Association (IBA) Executive Director Dr Mark Ellis joined King's College London for a panel on ‘Waging #Peace: How do we strive for global security, #justice and recovery in the 21st Century?’ During the discussion, Dr Ellis highlighted the dramatic, global rise in #nationalism and intolerance and the importance of civic #education in combatting this. He noted that raising awareness of and adherence to #humanrights and the #RuleOfLaw are critical in empowering the next generation to counter right-wing ideologies and to uphold international justice.
